An Arizona restaurant owner is earning national attention — and fierce backlash — for doing something many Americans would consider simple common sense: supporting law enforcement.

Sammy’s Mexican Grill has gone viral after videos spread online showing the restaurant openly welcoming U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and other federal officers with free meals. At a time when immigration enforcement officers face rising hostility, owner Jorge Rivas says his message is straightforward: respect the people who protect the country.

“Everyone who works for ICE, all federal agents can come to Sammy’s Mexican Grill,” Rivas said in a Spanish-language interview translated to English. “Here, they will be treated with respect and as they deserve.”

The policy isn’t new. Rivas explained on The Ray Stevens Show podcast that the restaurant has displayed a sign for years reading: *“Welcome to Sammy’s, where law enforcement always eats free.”*

“We’ve had that sign probably five years or more,” Rivas said. “We personally feel it is important to recognize the sacrifice law enforcement makes every day protecting every citizen, putting their life on the line.”

His reasoning is difficult to dispute. When emergencies strike, Americans expect help immediately. Police and federal agents answer those calls — often walking into dangerous situations for strangers they will never meet again.

“You and I know that once we’re in trouble, we call 911 and expect someone to show up,” Rivas said. “That’s why we honor them.”

But in today’s political climate, even offering a free meal to law enforcement is enough to spark outrage.

Sammy’s has reportedly been flooded with threatening calls, online harassment, and boycott campaigns from activists furious over the restaurant’s support for ICE. Tensions surrounding immigration enforcement have escalated nationwide following violent confrontations involving anti-ICE protesters. According to the Department of Homeland Security, attacks against immigration officers have skyrocketed in the past year, including dramatic increases in assaults, vehicle attacks, and death threats.

Rivas argues that this is exactly why visible community support matters now more than ever.

“These officers are being attacked,” he told Fox News. “We must give them our support. It’s not correct if they are not given the respect they deserve.”

The backlash is not entirely new to him. Rivas has been an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump for years and even ran in a Republican congressional primary. His political views made Sammy’s a target once before during Trump’s first campaign, and critics are again attempting to pressure the business into silence.

Instead, the controversy appears to be driving more customers through the door. Supporters across the country are praising the restaurant for standing firm while others cave to activist pressure. Many see Sammy’s as a small-business symbol of a broader cultural divide: one side eager to defend law enforcement and national sovereignty, the other determined to demonize those enforcing the law.

For Rivas, the issue isn’t complicated.

Respect the badge. Respect the law. Feed the people who keep your community safe.

In an era where even basic civic gratitude has become politicized, Sammy’s Mexican Grill is making a statement that resonates far beyond Arizona — and millions of Americans are cheering.
