Another Obama-world scandal just caught up with reality. Prakazrel “Pras” Michel — the rapper-turned-political-operative who secretly helped funnel foreign cash into Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election effort — has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison. For Democrats who still pretend their party is immune to corruption, this case is a brutal reminder that the rot runs deep.
Michel, 52, a founding member of the Fugees, stood silently in a Washington, D.C. courtroom as U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly handed down the stiff sentence. In addition to 14 years behind bars, he was given three years of probation and ordered to forfeit a staggering $64 million tied to his international influence-peddling scheme.

The Grammy-winning rapper was convicted in April 2023 on 10 federal charges — including conspiracy, illegal foreign lobbying, and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The trial featured jaw-dropping testimony from Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, underscoring just how far Michel’s shadow operation reached.

According to the Justice Department, Michel wasn’t dabbling in minor campaign violations — he was running a full-blown foreign influence pipeline. He accepted a jaw-dropping $120 million from fugitive Malaysian billionaire Low Taek Jho (known as Jho Low), a man desperate to buy political influence in Washington. Michel then funneled foreign cash through roughly 20 straw donors to inject money directly into Obama’s campaign and other political causes.

Prosecutors didn’t mince words. They argued Michel “betrayed his country for money,” lied repeatedly to cover his tracks, tampered with witnesses, and even perjured himself during trial. They asked for a life sentence, citing the scope of the crime and the national security risks created when a foreign government can simply buy its way into the White House through Democratic fundraising channels.
“His sentence should reflect the breadth and depth of his crimes, his indifference to the risks to his country, and the magnitude of his greed,” prosecutors wrote.
Michel’s lawyer, naturally, called the request “absurdly high,” suggesting a mere three-year sentence instead — a laughable recommendation given the scale of the corruption. The court clearly disagreed.

Despite the seriousness of the crimes, Michel’s team insists on spinning the fallout. His spokesperson tried to cast the disgraced rapper as some kind of inspirational figure, telling Rolling Stone, “This is not the end of his story,” and thanking supporters.
But the real story is this: while Democrats lecture the country about “election integrity” and rail against foreign influence, one of their own high-dollar fundraisers spent years shoveling foreign cash into Obama’s campaign — and only now is paying the price.

It’s yet another reminder that when Democrats accuse others of sins, they’re often projecting. And while the media will try to memory-hole this scandal, Americans should not forget who benefitted politically from this elaborate foreign money laundering operation: Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.
Accountability, long overdue, has finally arrived.
