In a stark warning sign for the future of the Democratic Party and American sovereignty, Melat Kiros—a self-described democratic socialist—has defeated a longtime Democrat incumbent in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District primary. Now, this far-left firebrand is poised to ride a deep-blue wave into Washington, bringing with her a platform that should alarm every patriotic American.
Kiros, who arrived in the United States as an infant from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, after her family won the Diversity Visa Lottery, wasted little time embracing the most extreme elements of the radical left. Before diving into politics, she worked as an attorney at the prestigious Sidley Austin firm in New York—until she was reportedly let go after publishing a Medium article defending pro-Palestinian activists in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel. She supplemented her career with barista shifts while battling student loans, a detail her campaign likely hopes humanizes her radicalism.
What has drawn intense scrutiny, however, are Kiros’ repeated attempts to justify the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks. In a June 2026 interview, she suggested the mass murder of nearly 3,000 innocent Americans was “inevitable” because U.S. foreign policy had “destabilized a lot of the Middle East,” leaving terrorists with “no choice” but violence. This victim-blaming of America on the anniversary of our nation’s greatest modern tragedy reveals a worldview dangerously detached from reality—one that excuses Islamist terrorism while condemning the country that gave her family refuge.
Her policy agenda reads like a greatest-hits list from the socialist playbook. Kiros demands the outright abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the immediate release of detainees without criminal records. She calls for an “immediate pathway to citizenship” for every illegal alien and asylum seeker—potentially 20 million people—flooding the system further and rewarding lawbreaking. Taxpayers, of course, would foot the bill.
The aspiring congresswoman also wants to eliminate private health insurance, impose federal rent stabilization, hike the federal minimum wage, slap a moratorium on new data centers, and cut off U.S. military aid to Israel—the only democracy in the Middle East fighting for its survival against the very terrorists she appears eager to contextualize. These proposals aren’t “progressive”; they’re economically illiterate and a direct threat to American security, prosperity, and the rule of law.
Kiros has earned glowing endorsements from the usual suspects on the radical left: the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Justice Democrats, Sunrise Movement, Working Families Party, and CAIR Action. She is herself a DSA member, proudly wearing the label of democratic socialist.
Colorado’s 1st District, anchored in deep-blue Denver, offers her a clear path to victory in the general election. Longtime incumbent Diana DeGette’s ouster shows how the party’s activist base has shifted dramatically leftward, prioritizing ideology over competence or moderation.
Conservatives have every reason to sound the alarm. Kiros represents the triumph of identity-driven grievance politics over common sense. Her rise highlights the urgent need for stronger borders, fiscal responsibility, and unapologetic support for law enforcement and American interests abroad. As Denver prepares to send another voice to Capitol Hill, voters nationwide should watch closely. This is not the future most Americans want—one of open borders, defunded enforcement, and excuses for terrorism. It is, however, the future the modern Democratic Party is hurtling toward.
