The Queen of England, Elizabeth II, has reigned for over 70 years, making her the longest-reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant in world history. She ascended to the throne in 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI. A popular and respected figure both domestically and abroad, Elizabeth has been credited with maintaining the stability of the British monarchy throughout her long reign.
Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, in London, England. She was educated at home by her mother and governesses, and later attended Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. In 1945 she was appointed as a junior officer in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. After World War II ended, she pursued a career in fashion modeling and then married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1947. The following year she became queen consort of the United Kingdom when her husband ascended to the throne as King George VI.
When King George VI died in 1952, Elizabeth succeeded him as queen regnant of the United Kingdom and head of the Commonwealth realms. She has ruled for more than 70 years, making her one of the longest-serving heads of state in world history. In addition to her lengthy reign, Elizabeth is also noted for her work ethic and dedication to public service. She is widely respected for her political savvy and diplomatic skills, which have been put to good use throughout her time as queen.
Elizabeth has four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Andrew, Duke of York; and Edward, Earl of Wessex. She also has eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In 2017 she became the first British monarch to reach the milestone of having great-grandchildren born in three different centuries (21st, 20th, and 19st).
Elizabeth is known for her love of animals, particularly horses, and has been an avid horseback rider throughout her life. She also enjoys gardening, spending time with her family, and attending sporting events. A respected figure both domestically and abroad, Elizabeth II is one of the most popular monarchs in British history.
