A chaotic and disturbing scene outside the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center is raising fresh concerns about political violence on the left after a viral video appeared to show a man being swarmed, assaulted, and allegedly doused with gasoline by anti-ICE protesters during a demonstration.
The incident involved Jon Mellis, 39 — known online as “PatriotWildMan” — a January 6 participant who says he was violently targeted while covering a protest tied to the one-year anniversary of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles.
Video footage circulating across social media shows Mellis being chased through the streets by an aggressive crowd while protesters scream insults, including branding him a “pedophile worshiper.” At several points in the clip, masked individuals appear to rush toward him as tensions spiral out of control.
According to Mellis, what began as a relatively calm effort to conduct interviews quickly turned dangerous once protesters recognized him.
“Me and my friend went to the anti-ICE protest,” Mellis explained after the ordeal. “We masked up, and we were lightly telling people who asked that we worked with the DNC.”
Mellis said he and his cameraman were attempting to document the demonstration and speak with protesters about why they were there when things took a dramatic turn.
“I got maybe two or three interviews in,” he said, “before protesters recognized me with my mask on. They started yelling, ‘Proud Boy, Proud Boy,’ and then everybody started coming toward me — immediately throwing things, attacking, pouring gas.”
That moment, captured on camera, has since ignited outrage online and renewed criticism of what conservatives argue is a double standard when it comes to political violence.
The footage was recorded by cameraman Eoin Richard, who has covered demonstrations across major cities including Washington, Chicago, and Minneapolis. Richard said the escalation happened in mere seconds.
“We were there to film a protest,” Richard explained. “Jon was getting some interviews with protesters, very nonpartisan, simple questions like, ‘Why are you here today?’ Then suddenly, we were swarmed.”
According to Richard, a woman with a bullhorn approached Mellis moments before masked activists — whom he identified as Antifa-affiliated protesters — allegedly rushed in carrying some type of chemical liquid.
“One tried to dump it on him,” Richard said. “He was doused while trying to push the container away, and then somebody punched him in the face.”
The situation reportedly deteriorated so rapidly that both men ran for safety while a crowd allegedly chased them.
“We were literally sprinting for our lives,” Richard recalled. “A mob of people was chasing us.”
He also claimed protesters became confrontational with law enforcement during the chaos.
Eventually, Mellis and Richard contacted the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers later placed Mellis in the back of a patrol vehicle and escorted him safely to his car amid fears that the demonstration was turning into a riot.
Mellis clarified that he was never arrested.
“He didn’t pat me down. He didn’t search me,” Mellis said of the responding officer. “He said I wasn’t being detained. He saw what happened. They just wanted to get me safely back to my vehicle.”
Homeland Security agents were reportedly later dispatched to the protest area, while local media confirmed several arrests occurred during the demonstration.
For many conservatives, the footage is yet another example of what they see as unchecked political extremism being tolerated in America’s major cities.
Critics argue the same activists who frequently lecture about “democracy” and “tolerance” seem increasingly comfortable using intimidation and violence against people they disagree with politically.
As the viral footage continues spreading online, many are asking a simple question: if this had happened in reverse, would the media response look very different?
