When Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder the courtroom was full of onlookers who noticed strange writing on the palm of his left hand. Derek was declared guilty in the George Floyd case that gathered attention from millions of people. Whilst he was being escorted out of the courtroom people noticed that he had written something on his left hand. Some onlookers were able to decode the message despite Derek being in handcuffs. The court found Mr. Chauvin guilty on all charges relating to the murder of George Floyd, sentencing him to a possible lifelong sentence behind bars. But, Chauvin still had a few nuggets to share with the world. Today Chauvin’s lawyer lets us in on the reason he had the mysterious writing on the palm of his hand. Eric Nelson, Derek’s lawyer, explains that his client was braced for the worst when he was walking into the courtroom. Aware that the verdict could be undesirable, he advised his client to write down his number if he got transferred to jail immediately after the trial. This was a well-thought-out strategy that would allow Derek to communicate as soon as he got hold of a phone in prison. Their forecast turned out Eric was right because the trial went on as they feared.

Chauvin was denied bail and was consequently taken into custody to await his sentencing trial. The sentencing trial is scheduled to take place eight weeks later. Derek faces up to forty years in jail unless the judge takes the prosecution’s suggestion and gives him the maximum sentence. If he is given forty years in prison, Derek will be about 85 years old when he is released. Of course assuming he is not released earlier due to technicalities like good behavior. During his verdict reading, Derek wore a mask as per the Covid-19 regulations in the state. After the crowd present heard the verdict cheers and chants erupted. People were pleased to earn that justice had been served for the torture and murder of George Floyd. The judge only needed to verify that the murder had to aggravate factors to give Derek forty years behind bars. Ben Crump, the lawyer representing the Floyd family in the courtroom held a moment of silence to proclaim the historic moment for American justice and for George Floyd’s legacy.

Ben noted that the sentencing was a victory for anyone who champions humanity over inhumane deeds and justice over injustice. As expected Derek and his lawyer were already making plans to appeal the guilty verdict as soon as they got a chance. If the appeal does not work, the next course of action for the duo is to bargain for a lighter sentence. Of course, Chauvin knew that the only place to write the phone number is on his palm since inmates are not allowed much in terms of materials. We can be sure of one thing; Derek has a lot of time in jail to memorize the phone number. The public will sleep soundly tonight knowing that there is one less criminal walking free. Derek’s sentencing makes a great point to law-enforcing men and women who go too far on duty. It is a symbol that no one is above the law and justice prevails in the end. As the clock ticks, it’s all a matter of wait and sees.
