In a fiery post on X, Ambassador Ric Grenell—President Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions and now a key coordinator in the administration’s wildfire response—made it crystal clear: California won’t be getting a blank check from Washington anymore. Not until it finally gets serious about solving the man-made problems fueling its devastating wildfires.

Year after year, California is engulfed in flames. And year after year, Democratic leaders in Sacramento—chiefly Governor Gavin Newsom—blame everyone but themselves. But this time, the Trump Administration isn’t playing along.

Grenell, known for his no-nonsense approach, ripped Newsom for his ongoing failure to implement basic, common-sense forest and water management practices that could have prevented many of the state’s catastrophes. “In California… We live on the ocean but our Governor can’t figure out how to get more water,” Grenell wrote. “So he spends millions of tax dollars telling people not to water their lawns and to take faster showers.”

Instead of investing in water infrastructure—like desalination plants that would give the drought-prone state more resilience—Newsom has spent his time virtue signaling about climate change and building his personal brand.

Grenell didn’t stop there. He blasted the state’s utter failure to manage its forests. “We have 33 million acres of forest land but our Governor can’t figure out how to properly remove dead trees,” he added. Those dead, dry trees serve as fuel for the wildfires that destroy homes, displace families, and cost lives.

“When you combine Gavin’s water and forest incompetence—you get deadly fires,” Grenell wrote, summing up the reckless mismanagement under California’s far-left leadership.

He went on to lay out the hard truth: until the state starts doing its part, don’t expect handouts from the federal government. “The fires will happen again,” Grenell warned. “I’ve told DJT we shouldn’t spend federal money on California if the problems aren’t fixed first.”

That’s a refreshing stance for millions of Americans tired of watching their tax dollars go up in smoke—literally—because radical Democrats refuse to follow basic land management science that even Native Americans once used to prevent wildfires.

Grenell didn’t hold back in calling out Newsom’s political priorities either. Instead of tackling the crisis on the ground, Newsom is focused on his own national ambitions. “Meanwhile, Gavin is launching his 5th version of a podcast trying to rebrand himself to run for President,” Grenell noted. “He isn’t interested in fixing the problems. I pray the Democrats nominate him. He’s a total and complete fraud—and the swing states will see it instantly.”

Predictably, Newsom tried to deflect by attacking Trump over immigration enforcement, accusing him of using federal resources to round up migrants instead of providing wildfire relief. But the facts—and Grenell—tell a different story: this crisis isn’t about Washington’s response. It’s about California’s failures.

If Newsom wants federal help, he’ll have to earn it—not campaign for it.
