The world lost a true icon of Appalachian culture this week with the passing of Kenny Law, star of Discovery Channel’s *Moonshiners*. At 68, Law left this world peacefully on January 14, 2025, surrounded by family, but his legacy as a bold outlaw, moonshine master, and charismatic TV personality will endure for generations.
Law’s family shared the heartfelt news in a Facebook statement: “With sorrow, we announce that Everett ‘Kenny’ Law passed away peacefully… surrounded by loved ones. Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers.” Another post from the family encapsulated the spirit of the man they so adored: “We love you and are already lost without you! Please look over us as you always have! SHINE On Brother!”
Hailing from Franklin County, Virginia—known as the “Moonshine Capital of the World”—Law carried on a family tradition of distilling that spanned three generations. With his cousin, Henry Lee Law, Kenny co-owned Law’s Choice Distillery, where they turned a once-clandestine craft into a celebrated business, producing legal moonshine and paying homage to their Appalachian roots.
Law rose to national fame in 2011 when *Moonshiners* debuted on the Discovery Channel. Over 14 seasons, the show chronicled the lives of Appalachian distillers who honored the 200-year-old tradition of crafting homemade spirits. Law’s rugged charm, no-nonsense attitude, and soft heart made him a fan favorite.
“He was a true outlaw—rebellious, fun-loving, charming, and tough as nails, yet soft-hearted toward those he loved,” his obituary read.
Law’s life was anything but ordinary. He survived a near-fatal propane explosion in 1977 during a moonshining operation, emerging unscathed only to rush back into the flames to rescue his father. Though he suffered severe burns, Kenny made a full recovery and returned to his “outlaw ways.”
A true fighter, Law faced health challenges in recent years, including diabetes, a heart attack in 2024, and a blood infection that ultimately overwhelmed his body. Despite these struggles, his indomitable spirit never wavered.
Henry Lee Law, Kenny’s cousin and close confidant, confirmed that Kenny passed away surrounded by family. “In the end, his body wore out, but his legacy will live on,” Henry shared.
Kenny’s passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from those who knew him best. Castmate Amanda Bryant expressed her sorrow on Instagram: “You will be dearly missed. It was an honor to know you and call you my friend.” Photographer Kenny Webster honored him as “a legendary Kenny Law.”
Kenny is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kenzie and Nathan Wright; grandsons, Atlas and Fox Wright; brothers, David and Ronnie (Suzanne) Law; cousin, Henry Lee Law; and a host of extended family and fans who adored him.
A funeral is set for Saturday at Flora Funeral Chapel in Rocky Mount, Virginia. As the world says goodbye to this larger-than-life figure, Kenny Law’s story serves as a reminder of the enduring strength and spirit of the Appalachian people.
Rest in peace, Kenny. Shine on.
