A rare, two-headed baby born in northern Mexico on January 6 has died, according to Fox News.

The unusual infant’s arrival was announced through a family video shared with the local media. The baby’s mother, who lives in Chihuahua, was not named.

The baby was alive in the video but died soon afterward.

The doctors involved with the situation refused to comment on the baby’s sex or whether the it was actually conjoined twins. The incidence of conjoined twins is one in every 200,000 births, with 70 percent of the babies being female.

The issue occurs due to genetics or as a side effect of medication given to the mother during pregnancy. Doctor Lorenzo Soberanes, who works in the border city of Juarez, said there was no record of another two-headed birth in all of Mexico.

He added that further study needs to be done on the genetics and lifestyle of the parents in this case.

The cause of death of the baby is unknown. According to doctors, the infant was in stable condition for several hours after its very difficult birth and passed away unexpectedly.

The mother and other members of the immediate family have declined to comment on the event.
