March Madness isn’t just delivering upsets and buzzer-beaters—it’s also serving up some unexpected off-the-court entertainment.
After Florida’s dominant 87-71 Sweet 16 victory over Maryland on Thursday, most Gators fans were celebrating their team’s march to the Elite Eight. But for one Florida player, a quick postgame interview may have been even more memorable than his rare moment on the court.
Bennett Andersen, a former walk-on who spent three years as the Gators’ team manager, made the most of his limited playing time. With 40 seconds left, Andersen pulled down an offensive rebound and fought his way to the basket for just his second bucket of the season—an exciting moment for the Florida bench.
But it was his postgame interview, not his layup, that sent social media into a frenzy.
Speaking with ESPN Gainesville’s Talia Baia in the locker room, Andersen couldn’t hide his excitement—though fans were convinced it wasn’t just about basketball.
Baia, a student reporter at the University of Florida, congratulated Andersen, known as “Buckets” to his teammates, on the Gators’ big win. Andersen answered several questions about the tournament and his clutch moment on the court, but his wide-eyed expression and beaming smile had fans speculating that he was captivated by more than just the game.

“That man is in love lol,” one user on X (formerly Twitter) joked.
“Bennie Buckets about to risk it all and go for 50 pts,” another wrote, referencing the upcoming Elite Eight matchup against Texas Tech.
“Bros better than me, I would’ve folded,” a third chimed in.
Another comment summed up the moment perfectly: “That interview meant waaaaay more than the bucket. He won’t sleep for a month after that interview.”
While Andersen’s potential March Madness love story may be just speculation, the lighthearted moment became a welcome break from the usual tournament intensity.

Andersen didn’t see any minutes in Florida’s next game, but the Gators didn’t need any extra magic to punch their ticket to the Final Four. Led by a monster 30-point performance from senior guard Walter Clayton Jr., Florida took down Texas Tech 84-79 in the Elite Eight.
Sophomore forward Thomas Haugh added 20 points, while graduate student Alijah Martin chipped in 10. The win marks Florida’s sixth Final Four appearance in program history—and their first in over a decade.
The Gators now await their next opponent, which will be decided by Sunday’s Auburn-Michigan State showdown.
For Andersen, whether or not he gets another shot on the court remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure—his March Madness moment won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
