American Idol is a singing competition that began airing in 2002 on the Fox network. The show is produced by FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment, and is hosted by Ryan Seacrest. American Idol sought to find new solo recording artists, who are typically unknowns outside of their respective hometowns.

The show begins with a series of auditions, in which contestants sing in front of a panel of judges. The judges then narrow down the contestants to a group of 24 semi-finalists. These contestants are then divided into three groups, and perform one night each on successive weeks. The judges eliminations from these performances determines the 12 finalists who compete in the live shows.

The winner of American Idol receives a recording contract with a major label, monetary prizes and other considerations. The titles of most recent season winner and runner-up have been “American Idol”, “American Idol Runner-Up”. A total of ten seasons have aired on Fox with at least one more to come.

In 2010, American Idol was estimated to bring in $900 million to the economy of the United States according to a report from The Los Angeles Times. In 2015, it was estimated that American idol added about $1 billion dollars to Fox Broadcasting.

American Idol has been named the most successful reality TV program in U.S. history, while also being ranked as one of the longest running and highest rated shows in American television history by Nielsen Media Research. The show’s 34 season-opener holds the record for Fox’s most watched opening night primetime telecast ever, pulling
