In the latest round of political lawfare from the Left, New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched yet another lawsuit against President Donald Trump—this time aiming to block his administration’s common-sense efforts to prevent illegal immigrants from abusing the American welfare system.
James, joined by a coalition of blue-state attorneys general, is suing the Trump administration over a recent executive order aimed at verifying the eligibility of individuals receiving federal welfare benefits like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). In other words, President Trump is trying to make sure that taxpayer-funded food assistance is going to American citizens—not to those who violated our laws to enter and remain in the country. But according to Letitia James and her left-wing allies, that’s unacceptable.
The Trump executive order, issued in April, instructs the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice to develop mechanisms to ensure that illegal aliens are not fraudulently receiving federal benefits. It also demands that states cooperate by sharing data regarding who is receiving those benefits—data that includes addresses, Social Security numbers, immigration status, and more. That data could be used not just to cut off benefits but to identify and deport those here illegally.
Naturally, the Left exploded. Letitia James immediately ran to the courtroom, claiming that sharing such information—even for the purpose of enforcing federal law—is somehow “illegal.” Her office released a furious press statement alleging that using eligibility data to enforce immigration law is a “violation of the law,” without citing any actual legal provision that says so.
“Families should be able to get the food assistance they need without fearing that they will be targeted by this administration,” James whined, ignoring the fact that illegal immigrants are *not supposed* to be eligible for that assistance in the first place.
She doubled down, saying, “I will not allow the SNAP benefits that millions of New Yorkers count on to be put at risk.” But let’s be clear—what she’s really doing is prioritizing the comfort of non-citizens, including those who broke the law to be here, over the rights of hardworking, law-abiding Americans who fund these programs.
The AG’s office even went as far as to defend the controversial practice of illegal immigrant parents applying for SNAP benefits on behalf of their U.S.-born children, a loophole that allows taxpayer dollars to indirectly support households that shouldn’t be in the country at all. It’s a sleight of hand that’s been exploited for years, and Trump’s team is finally saying enough is enough.
At its core, this lawsuit is not about compassion. It’s about power and control. The Democrats have made it clear that their future political fortunes depend on protecting illegal immigrants at all costs—even if it means bankrupting the welfare system, ignoring the rule of law, and eroding American sovereignty in the process.
President Trump, on the other hand, is doing what the federal government *should* be doing: putting American citizens first, protecting our tax dollars, and restoring integrity to a system that’s been riddled with abuse for far too long.
