In yet another predictable tantrum from the far-left, Democratic politicians in New Jersey are throwing a fit over the Trump Administration’s commonsense plan to use military bases in New Jersey and Indiana to house detained illegal immigrants temporarily. The move is part of a broader strategy to finally get serious about securing America’s borders and enforcing immigration laws — something Democrats have been reluctant to do for years.
The Department of Defense and Homeland Security recently announced that Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey and Camp Atterbury in Indiana will serve as “temporary soft-sided holding facilities” for illegal aliens caught crossing the border. This is hardly a new use for these bases. In fact, after the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, these same military installations were used to temporarily house thousands of Afghan refugees. But when it’s Americans enforcing the law and protecting the border, suddenly it’s a national crisis to Democrats.
Secretary of Defense Anthony Hegseth sent a letter to Congress clarifying that this use of military property “will not negatively affect military training, operations, readiness, or other military requirements, including National Guard and Reserve readiness.” In other words, the military’s mission won’t be compromised by helping secure the border and handle the immigration crisis responsibly.
SECDEF @PeteHegseth has confirmed that illegal aliens will now be housed in military bases in the states of Indiana and New Jersey.

But left-wing politicians are lashing out in full outrage mode. Leading the charge are New Jersey Democrats like Reps. Herb Conaway, LaMonica McIver, Donald Norcross, Rob Menendez, Frank Pallone, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Josh Gottheimer, Nellie Pou, along with Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim. Notably, Rep. McIver has previously been arrested for assault after attacking federal agents during a protest at another immigration detention center. So much for respecting law enforcement.
In a furious letter to Secretary Hegseth, these Democrats condemned the move as “radical” and “inhumane,” accusing the Trump Administration’s immigration policies of treating undocumented immigrants and even U.S. citizens with cruelty. They claim that “using our country’s military to detain and hold undocumented immigrants jeopardizes military preparedness and paves the way for ICE immigration raids in every New Jersey community.”
What’s glaringly missing from their complaints? Any mention of the fact that the military bases housed thousands of Afghan refugees just a few years ago — a much larger operation with far more people — and no similar concern about military readiness was raised then. The double standard is obvious: when it comes to securing the border and enforcing immigration law, Democrats would rather put politics over safety.
They concluded their letter by accusing the Trump Administration of “politicizing” the military and calling the use of the armed forces to protect America “unacceptable and shameful.” Meanwhile, the Biden Administration continues to weaponize government agencies and politicize every part of the federal bureaucracy with little pushback from these same lawmakers.
This backlash is just another example of the left’s refusal to confront the reality of America’s open border crisis. While they scream about “humanitarian” concerns and “militarization,” real Americans are demanding results — border security, law enforcement, and respect for the rule of law. Using military bases for temporary detention is a smart, practical solution, and Democrats should stop playing politics with national security and public safety.
It’s time for the left to grow up and stop putting politics ahead of America’s security. The safety and sovereignty of this nation are not negotiable.
