Former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered what was intended to be a fiery anti-Trump speech at a high-profile fundraiser in Beverly Hills this week—but the internet came away talking about something else entirely: the musician seated behind her appearing to fall asleep on stage.
The awkward moment unfolded during the annual William O. Douglas Award Dinner hosted by Public Counsel, a nonprofit organization that connects low-income clients with pro bono legal services. The gala serves as the group’s flagship fundraising event and routinely attracts wealthy donors, activists, and celebrity guests from across Los Angeles.
This year’s featured speaker was Harris, whose political comeback tour continues after her failed 2024 presidential campaign. But while Harris attempted to energize the crowd with familiar attacks on President Donald Trump and Republicans, one exhausted-looking saxophonist seated nearby seemed to have a very different reaction.
Video footage from the event, reportedly captured by an audience member and circulated online, appeared to show the musician slowly nodding off while Harris launched into one of her trademark rambling speeches. Social media users immediately seized on the clip, with conservatives joking that the musician represented millions of Americans forced to sit through another “word salad” lecture from the former vice president.
Harris spent much of the evening warning that democracy itself is supposedly under attack, claiming Americans would “take to the streets” if elections were ever canceled—a scenario critics dismissed as melodramatic political theater.
She also accused Republicans of intentionally trying to suppress voter participation, arguing that conservatives want to make voting “so difficult” that Americans simply give up. It was a familiar talking point from Harris, who has repeatedly framed GOP election reforms as existential threats to democracy.
But if the room was electrified by her remarks, the saxophonist clearly missed the memo.
As Harris continued criticizing what she called the “corrupt, incompetent, callous administration” currently in the White House, the musician appeared increasingly drowsy. By the end of the speech, he finally stirred awake just in time to help close out the event—though by then, the internet had already crowned him the accidental star of the evening.
The viral clip quickly spread across social media platforms, where conservatives mocked both the speech and Harris’ speaking style, which has long been criticized for meandering delivery and confusing phrasing.
The incident also highlighted a broader issue facing Democrats heading into the next election cycle: enthusiasm.
While progressive activists continue pushing hardline rhetoric against Trump and the Republican Party, many Americans appear increasingly exhausted by apocalyptic political messaging that paints every election as the “end of democracy.”
During another portion of the event, Harris sat down with actress Uzo Aduba and declared that Democrats need to become “ruthless” in fighting Republicans, while accusing her own party of having “dropped the ball.”
That rhetoric may excite activist donors in Beverly Hills. But outside elite fundraising circles, Democrats are still struggling to reconnect with working-class voters concerned about inflation, crime, border security, and the economy.
And if the reaction online is any indication, Harris’ latest speech may have done more to inspire memes than momentum.
Kamala Harris gave a speech and the saxaphonist on stage with her fell asleep.
If that's not the end of her political career, then I don't know what is.
