Sometimes being in the right place at the right time is all that is required for capturing strange or spectacular footage. It may have been fate when such a thing happened to Jason Asselin recently.

He happened to be filming off the shore of Lake Superior on a recent Saturday evening, and he caught something that is quickly going viral, and for good reason. Countless viewers have described the subject of the video as a ghost ship.

The video in question shows a shot of Lake Superior from the shore with a blotchy figure resting on the horizon, jutting quite high above the surface of the water. The figure is bold and roughly pixelated due to the distance, but it could easily be compared to a sail on an old wooden ship.

The video has already been viewed over 100,000 times, and people can’t agree on what lies within the frame. The majority of the skeptics will look at the video and claim that the image is actually a type of mirage created by the curvature of the Earth in relation to the location of a ship that has crossed the horizon.

The image is essentially a reflection of a real ship that is some distance ahead of the location where the image appears to be.

Just because there is a potential scientific explanation for the event doesn’t mean the case is solved. The fact of the matter is that no one will know if this is a ghost ship, because it is impossible to disprove.
