Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, the Democrat prosecutor leading the politically motivated case against President Donald Trump, is now facing legal trouble of her own. In a stunning ruling, a Georgia court found that Willis and her office broke state law by refusing to comply with open records requests—forcing her to pay over $54,000 in legal fees and expenses.
The case is directly connected to her lawfare campaign against Trump, further exposing the blatant corruption surrounding her prosecution. This is a major setback for Willis, who has come under fire for both her legal overreach and personal misconduct.
The controversy centers around the Georgia Open Records Act (ORA), a law designed to ensure transparency in government. According to the court ruling issued on March 14, Willis’s office “knowingly and without substantial justification” withheld public records that were legally requested by attorney Ashleigh Merchant.
Merchant represents Michael Roman, a former Trump campaign and White House aide whom Willis has targeted in her relentless prosecution. When Merchant attempted to obtain documents through a lawful records request, Willis’s office stonewalled her, refusing to provide the information or offer a valid legal reason for withholding it.
The court ruled that Willis had blatantly violated the law, stating:
“In response to some of Plaintiff’s open records requests, Defendants acknowledged their receipt of the requests, but there is no dispute Defendants did not advise Plaintiff affirmatively within three business days… Thus, Defendants failed to comply with O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70(f) and violated the ORA.”
This means Willis’s office was caught breaking the law—ironically, while she tries to prosecute Trump over far shakier legal claims.
The court didn’t just hit Willis with financial penalties; it also ordered her to turn over the documents she had illegally concealed. In addition to the $54,103.23 in legal fees awarded to Merchant, the judge issued an injunction compelling Willis to finally release the requested records.
The ruling left no room for excuses, stating:
“Because Defendants lacked substantial justification for failing to comply with the ORA and no special circumstances exist, Plaintiff is entitled to attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses as well as injunctive relief compelling Defendants to provide certain public records.”
Translation: Willis tried to hide the truth, got caught, and now has to pay up.
This ruling is just the latest scandal for Willis, who has already faced intense scrutiny for her improper relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade—whom she secretly paid with taxpayer money while allegedly engaging in an affair with him.
From abusing her power to target political opponents to breaking transparency laws, Willis has proven time and again that she’s unfit for office. This court ruling is an important first step in holding her accountable.
While Fani Willis has spent months trying to take down Trump, she now finds herself in hot water. This ruling exposes the lawlessness of her office and the lengths she’ll go to in order to protect her corrupt agenda. The American people deserve better, and this could be the beginning of real consequences for her abuse of power.
