In a fiery interview with Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo, Vice President JD Vance tore into Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for what he called the “Schumer Shutdown” — accusing Democrats of holding America hostage to fund healthcare for illegal aliens while trying to block troop pay.

Vance didn’t mince words, calling out Schumer and his Senate Democrats for “shutting down the government to serve illegal immigrants at the expense of American citizens and soldiers.” The showdown, which began when Democrats refused to pass a clean funding bill before the September 30 deadline, has now stretched into its third week.

“Well, the plan is that when you’re in a shutdown — and we’re in a shutdown, of course — because Schumer and the Democrats shut down the government trying to force us to give health care benefits to illegal aliens,” Vance said bluntly. “They’d rather pay for non-citizens’ healthcare than pay our troops or help struggling American families.”

The Ohio Republican went on to explain that the Trump administration is using creative fiscal measures, including revenue from President Trump’s tariffs, to keep critical services running and ensure that soldiers continue to receive their paychecks. “We’re trying to make sure that flood insurance and other insurance programs don’t disappear during hurricane season,” he said. “But we’re also doing some pretty non-conventional things, as President Trump often does, to ensure that our troops are able to get paid.”

Vance emphasized that the administration is prioritizing American families despite Schumer’s obstruction. “We’re doing a lot to ensure that low-income women and children get their food benefits,” he told Bartiromo. “Even though Schumer shut down the government, the president doesn’t want our troops to suffer because of it — and he doesn’t want our national security to suffer either.”

The Vice President didn’t stop there. He accused Democrats of intentionally inflicting harm on ordinary Americans to score political points. “Wouldn’t it be great if the Democrats just opened up the government so that we did not have to make these very difficult decisions?” Vance asked. “This isn’t complicated — we’re talking about choosing between giving taxpayer money to illegal immigrants or supporting our troops and vulnerable Americans. President Trump has made it clear where his priorities lie.”

Vance also used the moment to highlight how the administration is exposing the bloated federal bureaucracy that Democrats are so desperate to protect. “You hear a lot of Senate Democrats say, ‘Well, how can Donald Trump possibly lay off all of these federal workers?’” Vance said. “Well, the Democrats have given us a choice between giving low-income women their food benefits and paying our troops on the one hand, or paying federal bureaucrats on the other. We’re choosing the American people every time.”

In closing, Vance drove home the point that the Trump administration is standing tall for ordinary Americans — not the political elites or special interest groups. “Given that choice, we’re going to choose low-income women, we’re going to choose our troops,” he said firmly. “That is the choice the Democrats have given us. I would really appreciate if they gave us a different choice, but until they do, we’ll keep fighting for the American people.”

Once again, the Trump team is proving that America First isn’t just a slogan — it’s a governing philosophy.
