When buttons were first created, they were considered to be a luxury that only wealthy people could afford. Men’s shirts button the right side. The reason for this is to make it easier for men to dress themselves.
Women’s shirts button on the left side. The wealthy women were dressed by maids.
The buttons make it easier for the women to dress themselves. The buttons would have likely been placed on the opposite side if the women dressed themselves. Fashion designers may decide to change this in the future.
