In yet another grim example of the chaos unleashed by open-borders extremism, a Mexican national who’s been deported six times and has a rap sheet filled with domestic violence and child abuse charges tried to ram his truck into ICE agents during an operation in Colorado Springs last week. And unbelievably, far-left activist groups showed up to defend him.

According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the suspect — 31-year-old Jose Mendez-Chavez — and his accomplice, Francisco Zapata-Pacheco, both illegally present in the United States, tried to violently disrupt a lawful immigration enforcement operation on July 31. Fortunately, none of the ICE agents were injured during the attack.

ICE officials said Mendez-Chavez attempted to plow his vehicle into agents, prompting one officer to draw his weapon and fire three warning shots to stop the advancing threat. The shots did not hit the suspects, but they did succeed in halting the attempted vehicular assault.

Rather than face justice, the two illegal aliens ditched the vehicle and fled on foot. Zapata-Pacheco was arrested later that same day, but Mendez-Chavez—who has been deported six times—remains at large.

ICE confirmed the attackers were well-known to authorities. Mendez-Chavez, in particular, is no “DREAMer” or “asylum seeker” as the media often likes to portray illegal immigrants—he’s a violent repeat offender with child abuse and domestic violence convictions. And he’s been repeatedly welcomed back into the U.S., thanks in large part to Democrat-led sanctuary policies that tie law enforcement’s hands and shield criminals from deportation.

In a statement, an ICE spokesperson slammed left-wing activists with the Colorado Rapid Response Network (CRRN), who were present during the incident to protest the federal operation. The group claims to defend the rights of immigrants—but apparently has no issue defending child abusers who try to run over federal officers.

“It is despicable that Colorado Rapid Response Network would show up in defense of an alien who has abused children and attempted to injure our officers,” said the ICE spokesperson. “Our brave ICE law enforcement officers are facing an 830% increase in assaults against them due to the misinformation activist groups spread.”

ICE made clear that Mendez-Chavez is not the victim here. “He is an abuser who plays the system and is now wanted for assault on a federal officer. He knows he’s not supposed to be here—we’ve removed him six times already.”

The FBI is now involved in the investigation, issuing a statement saying, “FBI Denver is investigating an alleged assault on a federal officer that occurred in El Paso County, Colorado… We do not have any further information to provide at this time.”

This violent attack should serve as yet another wake-up call to the American people: open-border policies and sanctuary city protections don’t keep us safe. They harbor violent criminals who return again and again to terrorize our communities—with the full support of far-left activists who seem more concerned with protecting criminals than upholding the law.

It’s long past time we stop treating immigration enforcement as optional and start putting the safety of American citizens first.
