In yet another horrifying reminder of the dangers faced by America’s immigration enforcement officers, an ICE agent in Phoenix, Arizona, was ambushed and injured early Wednesday morning by an illegal alien from Honduras during what began as a routine traffic stop. The attack quickly turned into a violent street confrontation — the kind of chaos that critics say is being fueled by the Left’s relentless demonization of law enforcement and open-borders policies.
The suspect, identified as Jose Garcia-Sorto, attempted to flee when agents pulled him over on Interstate 17 around 4:00 a.m. on October 29. As the officers approached the vehicle, Garcia-Sorto suddenly accelerated, trying to run one of them down. The officer, fearing for his life, fired his service weapon twice, striking the suspect’s vehicle. The ICE agent was later hospitalized for evaluation following the attack.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, this was part of a broader operation targeting illegal aliens in sanctuary cities and high-risk areas across the Southwest — the kind of aggressive enforcement effort former ICE Director Tom Homan once described as “flooding the zone.”
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin condemned the attack and directly linked it to the dangerous rhetoric spread by Democrats and open-borders activists. “These are the consequences of conduct and rhetoric by dishonest politicians who spew misinformation and activists who urge illegal aliens to resist arrest,” she said.
McLaughlin pointed to an alarming rise in attacks against ICE officers in recent months, saying the situation has become dramatically worse as Democrats have continued to vilify immigration enforcement. “Resisting arrest puts the safety of illegal aliens, law enforcement, and the public at risk,” she said. “Our law enforcement officers are facing a more than 1000% increase in assaults against them, including vehicle rammings by illegal aliens.”
Her message to sanctuary city politicians and their media allies was clear: stop encouraging resistance to ICE and start standing up for the men and women protecting America’s borders. “We are once again calling on sanctuary politicians, agitators, and the media to turn the temperature down and stop calling for violence and resistance against ICE law enforcement,” McLaughlin said.
