In the aftermath of a horrifying attack on a Catholic Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) wasted no time in doing what she does best: ignoring the real issue at hand and instead using tragedy to advance the Left’s gun control agenda.
The facts are clear — on August 27, a transgender individual named Robert “Robin” Westman opened fire during Mass, murdering two children and injuring 18 others. For Christians across America, the attack was yet another grim reminder of how hostility toward people of faith has escalated in recent years.
But for Omar, the violence against Catholic schoolchildren wasn’t the focus. Appearing on CNN’s *State of the Union* just days later, Omar downplayed the identity of the killer and brushed aside the anti-Christian nature of the crime. Instead, she seized the opportunity to demand yet again for an “assault weapons ban.”
“These people are all over the place because they want to deflect from the reality,” Omar said, bizarrely accusing conservatives of distraction. “There was someone who came into that school through the window and assassinated two beautiful angels as they prayed.”
The congresswoman then rattled off her preferred “solutions,” beginning not with securing schools or addressing radical ideologies, but with banning firearms. “One is to make sure that we are getting rid of assault weapons in our community. Two, that we are addressing mental health issues if there are some,” she declared.
Notice the order: guns first, mental health as an afterthought. Notice too what she never mentioned — the growing number of violent offenders who identify as transgender, and the disturbing online culture that often glorifies such behavior.
Rather than confront those realities, Omar wagged her finger at conservatives and urged Americans not to “point fingers.” She insisted, “This is not the moment to point fingers at people. It is time for us to come together and figure out what the solutions are.” In other words, don’t talk about the ideology of the killer, don’t talk about hostility toward Christians — just give the Left what it wants: another sweeping gun ban.
And when others dared to speak truthfully about the shooter’s background, Omar attacked them too. Referring to comments made by White House advisor Sebastian Gorka, Omar fumed, “It is really unfortunate that we have people like him speaking on this.” Translation: anyone who acknowledges the shooter’s transgender identity is part of the problem.
This has become a predictable pattern. When Christians are targeted, the Left looks the other way. When violence comes from someone who fits neatly into the progressive coalition — whether it’s Antifa rioters, pro-Hamas demonstrators, or a disturbed transgender shooter — Democrats suddenly lose interest in “root causes.” The only “solution” they ever seem to find is disarming law-abiding Americans.
Rep. Omar had a chance to stand with grieving Catholic families in her own state. Instead, she chose to stand on the graves of murdered children and push her party’s tired talking points. It’s a disgrace — but sadly, it’s also exactly what we’ve come to expect.
