In a stunning display of irony, California Governor Gavin Newsom has gone hat in hand to the Republican-controlled Congress and President Trump’s administration, pleading for a jaw-dropping $40 billion in federal relief to help with fire recovery efforts in Los Angeles. This comes just weeks after Newsom wasted $50 million of taxpayer money fighting the Trump administration on immigration and other policies.

In his letter, dated February 21, Newsom acknowledged the devastation of the January firestorms that ravaged Los Angeles County, destroying over 16,000 structures. “The State of California respectfully requests a Supplemental Appropriation for disaster funding,” he wrote, citing the catastrophic damage and the massive firefighting response. No one disputes the devastation—but the timing of Newsom’s request is more than a little rich.

Apparently unfazed by the contradiction, Newsom claimed California would need even more than the requested $40 billion, stating, “We expect to identify additional funding needs.” This is the same governor whose policies—overregulation, poor forest management, and misguided environmental restrictions—have exacerbated California’s wildfire crisis for years.

Perhaps the most audacious part of the letter was Newsom’s assertion that “California’s success is America’s success.” While he’s quick to brag about California’s massive economy—thanks to sky-high taxes and burdensome regulations that have driven out countless residents and businesses—Newsom conveniently ignores how his state’s fiscal mismanagement has led to the current crisis. California might have the world’s fifth-largest economy, but it’s also plagued by rampant homelessness, soaring crime rates, and skyrocketing living costs—all under Newsom’s watch.

Despite his long history of bashing President Trump, Newsom suddenly shifted to flattery, praising the administration’s efforts to expedite recovery operations. “We are eternally grateful,” he gushed, hoping to smooth over years of antagonism. Yet, just last month, he threw millions at legal battles against Trump’s immigration policies instead of investing in his state’s crumbling infrastructure and wildfire prevention. Now, he’s asking the very people he fought to bail him out.

President Trump, never one to mince words, has long criticized California’s failed leadership. Speaking with Joe Rogan in a 2024 interview, Trump pointed to California’s manufactured water crisis as another example of mismanagement. “They said, ‘We have no water.’ I asked if they had a drought. ‘No,’ they said. So why no water? ‘Because they won’t let it flow.’ It’s insanity,” Trump explained. That same bureaucratic incompetence has played a role in California’s wildfire issues, yet Newsom refuses to acknowledge it.

Adding to the absurdity, Newsom promised the $40 billion would be spent “wisely.” This from the governor who squandered tens of millions attacking federal policies rather than fixing his own state’s problems. And let’s not forget the billions California has thrown at failed high-speed rail projects and homeless initiatives with little to show for it.

It’s no wonder California finds itself begging for a bailout. While Newsom insists the funds are essential to help Los Angeles rebuild before hosting global events like the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics, many Americans are asking why taxpayers across the country should foot the bill for California’s self-inflicted wounds.

If Governor Newsom truly wants to help his state recover, maybe it’s time he stops blaming others, takes responsibility, and adopts policies that prioritize safety, fiscal responsibility, and common sense. Until then, Americans have every right to be skeptical about sending billions more to a state led by someone who seems more interested in political grandstanding than real solutions.
