In an era where many young people chase clout and outrage online, 17-year-old Paul Baier, son of Fox News anchor Bret Baier, is choosing a different path — one built on faith, resilience, and the true American spirit. After years of battling life-threatening congenital heart defects, Paul is launching a new podcast titled *“One Step at a Time,”* aimed at inspiring others through stories of overcoming hardship.
It’s a rare thing to see a young man who’s faced such immense physical trials turn around and use his platform not to complain or seek pity, but to encourage others. Born with five severe congenital heart defects, Paul has undergone five open-heart surgeries — the first just days after birth, the most recent in April 2024 at age 16. In total, he’s endured more than a dozen operations, each one a reminder of how precious and fragile life can be.
Yet Paul’s story isn’t one of victimhood. It’s one of grit, grace, and the kind of determination that once defined the American character. And now, through *“One Step at a Time,”* he’s inviting others — from everyday heroes to notable figures — to share how they faced down their own challenges and came out stronger.
His father, Bret Baier, announced the podcast in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 1:
“Check out my son Paul’s podcast that he started based on his time recovering from heart surgeries – *‘One Step at a Time’* – asking interesting people about their lives & challenges – getting the advice they’d give. We’re really proud of him.”

In the podcast’s introductory clip, Paul explains the name:
“I’ve had five open heart surgeries… Doctors and nurses have always taught me: just keep walking. It’s vital for recovery. It pumps blood in your muscles and builds strength across your body… We’re going to talk about their something and their challenge, and advice they give to others.”
That kind of perspective — built not in ivory towers or on college campuses, but through hospital rooms, recovery beds, and nights filled with prayer — is exactly what today’s America needs more of.
Of course, not everyone was gracious. In true leftist fashion, a few keyboard warriors couldn’t resist taking a cheap shot. One particularly heartless commenter implied that Paul only received world-class care because of his father’s profession, suggesting a child of a Walmart worker would’ve been left to die.
Bret Baier wasn’t having it.
“Actually no,” he replied. “Every surgery, we were in the waiting room with many families with no insurance – or very little income – and @ChildrensNatl provided the exact same care, thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters.”
It was a powerful reminder of how private philanthropy and faith-based generosity — not big government mandates — form the backbone of American healthcare excellence.
Most replies to Baier’s post were filled with encouragement, prayers, and shared experiences. One commenter wrote, “Thanks for sharing @BretBaier. We have a little friend waiting on his heart transplant… We pray every day for CJ.”
This isn’t the first time Bret has taken to X to update Americans on Paul’s condition. Back in April 2024, during the emergency surgery, he thanked the staff at Children’s National for once again saving his son’s life, writing, “He is doing remarkably well and we are so incredibly grateful.”
As the Left continues to elevate divisiveness, grievance culture, and emotional immaturity, Paul Baier is reminding us all what real courage and compassion look like — grounded in family, faith, and perseverance.
One step at a time — a lesson from a teenage conservative warrior America could stand to learn from.
