Former Maine Governor Paul LePage is hitting back hard at the left’s destructive economic agenda as he campaigns for Maine’s Second Congressional District. LePage, a no-nonsense conservative known for his tough stance on welfare abuse and fiscal responsibility, isn’t holding back in exposing how Democrats are deliberately trapping hardworking Americans in what he calls “economic shackles.”

Across the country, the backlash against Democrat policies is growing. Even in traditionally blue districts like the one LePage is seeking to represent, voters are fed up with skyrocketing taxes, bloated welfare programs, and the woke radicalism that’s crushing economic opportunity.

Speaking on May 18, 2025, LePage made clear where his loyalties lie: “My whole thing is about representing those who pay the taxes. They’re the boss.” He illustrated this with one of his signature reforms during his time as governor — putting photos on EBT welfare cards to curb rampant drug abuse linked to the program.

LePage explained the troubling pattern he uncovered: “People were handing over their EBT cards to drug dealers, and when those cards were loaded at the beginning of the month, the money would be gone between 2 and 4 a.m.” The governor’s logic was straightforward: “Very few mothers are buying baby formula two to four o’clock in the morning.” His solution? Adding photos to EBT cards, which led to a sharp drop in drug dealers’ ability to exploit the system. “From October 2015 until I left office, we didn’t see any more EBT cards in drug busts.”

But LePage’s fight isn’t over. He’s determined to bring his practical approach to Washington, where he hopes to break through Democrat obstruction. “I tried to put a tiered system in our welfare program in Maine — and I failed because of Democrats,” he lamented. The tiered system would allow low-income workers to keep a portion of their benefits as they earned more, rather than facing a cruel “all or nothing” cliff.

LePage passionately laid out the problem: “You want to give someone a 25 cent raise, and they can’t take it because they’ll lose all their benefits.” His plan? “Take 20 percent off benefits for every dollar earned. Keep doing that, and after five steps, they’ll be out of poverty.” The current system, he insists, is designed to keep people dependent, a trap Democrats have no interest in fixing. “I call it economic shackles.”

LePage’s message resonates in a nation fed up with Democrat welfare handouts and the culture of dependency. It’s a direct contrast to the left’s agenda, which too often prioritizes entitlement spending over empowering workers.

This fight comes as President Trump’s administration doubles down on reclaiming taxpayer money lost to fraud in blue states. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently uncovered nearly \$400 million in fraudulent unemployment payments — a staggering figure that highlights just how badly some states have mismanaged taxpayer funds.

Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer underscored the urgency: “This is another incredible discovery by the DOGE team, finding nearly \$400 million in fraudulent unemployment payments. The Labor Department is committed to recovering Americans’ stolen tax dollars. We will catch these thieves and keep working to root out egregious fraud.”

As Democrats cling to failed policies that hurt working Americans, leaders like Paul LePage are offering a bold alternative: economic freedom, accountability, and an end to the welfare traps that hold millions back. It’s a message sure to energize voters tired of the left’s economic failures and eager for real change in Washington.
