Octavia Wells, 41, was en route to rehab on New Year’s Eve when she decided to make one last purchase. Unfortunately for her, she mistakenly texted Bay County Sheriff’s Investigator Stephen Pettijohn—whose number she had saved from a previous encounter—thinking he was her drug dealer.
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, Wells offered $45 for the dangerous opioid in her text. Oblivious to her error, she arranged to meet Pettijohn, whom she had saved in her phone as “PJ,” at a Tom Thumb convenience store in Panama City.
When Wells arrived, she was greeted not by her dealer, but by narcotics officers ready to take her into custody.
“It was a simple mistake, but one that carried serious consequences,” a Bay County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said.
Wells later told police that Pettijohn’s name was strikingly similar to her drug dealer’s, which led to the accidental text. While the arrest affidavit did not detail her prior interaction with Pettijohn, it’s clear this wasn’t their first encounter.
The charges against Wells include unlawful use of a communication device, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license.
