When you’re driving over a bridge, you might have several thoughts to cross the mind, such as whether the bridge can hold the vehicle or if you could be blown off the bridge if it’s a windy day.
There are many drivers who don’t pay any attention to the warnings given when there is a lot of wind. Truck drivers must be on the road because it’s their job, but the vehicles that they drive can be dangerous in certain road conditions.
A sudden gust of wind can change the life of a truck driver forever. The wind can easily blow the truck off of a bridge because of the space that is underneath the vehicle. Joseph Chen found this fact out the hard way while he was traveling in Virginia.
Chen lived in North Carolina and worked as a truck driver. He was crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge when the wind started to pick up in speed. Chen was simply trying to take seafood to his employer that afternoon. The truck was able to legally cross the bridge.
However, about halfway through the journey, the conditions changed. The truck was unable to handle the winds, and the truck was blown off of the side of the bridge. Chen tried to hang on to the top of the truck, but he was swept away by the water of the river.
