When it comes to health, we all know that alcohol can be a double-edged sword. While excessive drinking can lead to a myriad of health issues, a California gastroenterologist, Dr. Saurabh Sethi, has taken to TikTok to share an eye-opening revelation: tequila might just be the healthiest option for those who choose to indulge.

Now, before we pop the cork on our tequila bottles, it’s important to clarify that Dr. Sethi emphasizes that no amount of alcohol is truly “good” for your health. However, if you’re going to drink, tequila offers some advantages over other options. Dr. Sethi explains that tequila is derived from the agave plant, making it low in sugar and carbohydrates, and unlike many liquors made from grains, tequila is naturally gluten-free.

Research from the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados in Mexico has shed light on another potential benefit of tequila. Scientists found that agave, the primary ingredient in tequila, is non-digestible and has minimal impact on blood sugar levels compared to other alcoholic beverages. This means that tequila drinkers may not experience the same blood sugar spikes associated with drinks made from grains.

But the benefits of tequila don’t stop there. Research from the University of Guadalajara suggests that the blue agave used to produce tequila can even enhance the effectiveness of certain medications for intestinal issues. The agave forms a protective barrier around these drugs, preventing them from diluting in the stomach, thus potentially increasing their efficacy.

Additionally, agave contains compounds known as fructans and fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which act as prebiotics. These compounds can foster a healthy gut microbiota and improve digestion, making tequila a surprising ally in gastrointestinal health.

One of the main reasons alcohol is often deemed harmful is due to its breakdown into acetaldehyde, a known toxin and carcinogen that can damage DNA. While tequila does also produce acetaldehyde, Dr. Sethi notes that the process is slower compared to other alcoholic beverages. This slower metabolism might explain why many tequila drinkers report fewer hangover symptoms the next day.

Supporting Dr. Sethi’s claims, a study from Brown University found that a major contributor to hangovers are fermentation products known as congeners. Remarkably, clear tequila made from 100 percent blue agave contains fewer congeners than many darker liquors, making it a potential choice for those looking to avoid a painful morning after.

However, it’s crucial to note that these benefits apply only to 100 percent agave tequila. Mixing tequila with sugary cocktails can quickly negate its advantages. Tanya Zuckerbrot, a certified dietitian, concurs, recommending tequila to her clients who wish to enjoy a drink without the heavy calorie burden. A shot of tequila contains only 64 calories, significantly less than the 96 calories found in a shot of vodka. The natural sweetness of tequila, thanks to its agave base, allows for a more flavorful drink without the need for sugary mixers.

Despite these findings, Dr. Sethi reminds us that the healthiest choice is still to limit alcohol consumption as much as possible. While tequila may have some advantages over other alcoholic beverages, moderation remains key. So, if you’re going to indulge, it seems tequila could be the better option—just be sure to raise your glass responsibly!
