A solemn moment of silence for conservative leader Charlie Kirk, brutally assassinated during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University, turned into a heated clash on the House floor when Democrats jeered at Republican calls for a spoken prayer.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) attempted to lead members in a moment of silence, but Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) immediately objected, declaring, “Silent prayers get silent results.” Her call for an audible, united prayer drew boos from Democrats — a reaction that sparked outrage among Republicans already grieving the loss of one of the conservative movement’s brightest stars.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) fired back at Democrats, shouting, “You all caused this,” a pointed reminder that years of left-wing demonization of Kirk and other conservative voices helped create the toxic climate that allowed this act of political violence to occur.
Speaker Johnson quickly tried to restore order, promising to organize a spoken prayer at a later time. But the ugly scene highlighted the deep divisions in Washington — even in the face of a national tragedy.
Kirk, 31, had been delivering remarks at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback Tour when a sniper opened fire from a nearby building, killing him instantly. His death has sent shockwaves across the nation, drawing condolences from conservatives and even rare condemnations of political violence from some on the Left.
President Donald J. Trump, who had long praised Kirk as one of the most effective conservative youth leaders in American history, delivered a heartfelt statement:
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one in the United States of America understood or had the Heart of a youth better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
Today, I led a letter calling for the removal of Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes, who released a 14-time offender who went on to murder Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte.

Even DNC Chairman Ken Martin, while careful to avoid pointing fingers, condemned the assassination: “Political violence — in all of its forms — is unacceptable in America.” Still, his words rang hollow for many conservatives who have watched the Left vilify Kirk for years, branding him with slurs, mocking his faith, and demonizing his unapologetic patriotism.
Vice President JD Vance, a close friend of Kirk’s, spoke emotionally about learning of his death while in a West Wing meeting. “I prayed a lot over the next hour, as first good news and then bad trickled in. God didn’t answer those prayers, and that’s OK. He had other plans. And now that Charlie is in heaven, I’ll ask him to talk to the big man directly on behalf of his family, his friends, and the country he loved so dearly. You ran a good race, my friend. We’ve got it from here.”
Kirk’s murder has exposed not only the rising tide of political violence in America but also the callousness of Democrats in Congress, who could not even bring themselves to respect a moment of unity in prayer. For conservatives, one truth is clear: Charlie Kirk’s voice may have been silenced, but his fight for faith, freedom, and America’s future lives on.
