In a major win for Florida homeowners, seniors, and conservative taxpayers, Governor Ron DeSantis has boldly taken aim at what he calls the “one-way ratchet” of rising property taxes. Speaking to crowds in Tampa and in widely shared social media clips, DeSantis slammed local governments for exploiting rising home values to squeeze more money from residents, particularly senior citizens who have long paid off their homes.

“From the property tax situation, it’s very important, given how that’s pinched so many homeowners, particularly our senior citizens, who have their homes paid off, and they bought it 30 years ago for a certain amount,” DeSantis said. “Now they’re being told it’s worth so much more and they have to pony up more and more money. It’s almost like they have to pay rent to the government just to be able to enjoy their property. And that’s wrong, and we need to do something about it.”

The Florida Republican is floating a homestead tax cut, along with rebates to address the problem, and is aiming for a 2026 ballot measure that could enact substantial, long-term tax relief. His move is being hailed by conservatives as a common-sense solution to a problem that has plagued homeowners for decades.

DeSantis explained how the system unfairly punishes homeowners as market values rise: “Your property gets assessed higher and higher. It’s an unrealized gain. You haven’t sold it for that much; they’re just telling you it’s worth that much. And guess what happens when the market corrects – which it inevitably does? Do they rush in to assess your property at a lower level? Not that I’m aware of. So it’s a one-way ratchet, and you basically get stuck paying higher taxes.”

The governor’s remarks echo concerns raised for years by conservative leaders. In 2018, former Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran emphasized that tax increases from rising assessments are a constant burden: “No matter where you go, ask any single individual, any community, any city, any county, and they will tell you it’s a tax increase. It’s a tax increase any time government takes more money from you this year than they took last year, and it was through no account of your own.”

Even prominent voices outside of Florida, like Elon Musk, have expressed frustration with the system, pointing out that high property taxes effectively turn a home into “a de facto lease from the government.”

Of course, not everyone is pleased with DeSantis’ plan. Woke activists and some Democrats, like Florida State Senator Shevrin Jones, are already decrying it as a threat to local budgets. “It sounds appealing on the surface, but it will still gut school budgets. It will still slash public safety funding, and it will still drive up costs in other ways,” Jones said. Yet many see these warnings as exactly the sort of government overreach that DeSantis is fighting: a system that prioritizes bureaucratic coffers over homeowners’ wallets.

With his proposal, Governor DeSantis is putting conservative principles into action: limiting government overreach, protecting seniors, and giving Floridians the freedom to enjoy the homes they worked a lifetime to pay for. For many homeowners, it’s a long-overdue reprieve—and a reminder that bold leadership still matters.
