Democrats are once again tying themselves in knots—this time over Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man the Left initially celebrated as a “model immigrant” before his long, ugly record of abuse, trafficking, and gang ties came to light. Now that reality has destroyed their narrative, Democrats are scrambling to pretend they were defending a “process,” not a violent criminal. But Americans aren’t buying it.

Garcia, arrested by the Trump Administration in spring 2025, is an alleged human trafficker, MS-13 associate, and serial wife-beater who lived in Maryland for years before federal authorities finally moved to deport him to El Salvador. His case has since become a rallying point for left-wing activists and Democratic politicians determined to halt deportations—even when the deportee is someone no sane society would want on its streets.

The saga reached its most embarrassing moment in early May, when Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) appeared on CNN and was confronted with the damning evidence Democrats pretended didn’t exist. Just weeks before, Padilla had glowingly described Garcia as a “family man” and “community member” unfairly targeted by the Trump Administration. But then police reports and a 2020 court audio surfaced in which Garcia’s wife begged a judge for protection from his violent abuse.

CNN’s Jake Tapper confronted Padilla with the evidence, asking bluntly why Democrats were fighting to bring back a man accused of terrorizing his own family. Tapper pressed, reminding Padilla that regardless of the wife’s later attempts to walk back her claims, the police reports tell a very different story.

Suddenly, Sen. Padilla—who had happily embraced Garcia as a political symbol before—wanted nothing to do with the man.

Padilla tried to pivot, claiming Democrats weren’t defending Garcia specifically, but rather “the process.” It was a desperate attempt to distance himself from the monster he and others had lionized. “Our advocacy here has a little bit less to do with him individually and more the process,” Padilla stammered, as though he hadn’t just weeks earlier personally vouched for Garcia’s character.

Of course, Democrats only discovered their passion for “due process” after Garcia’s crimes became public and their narrative collapsed. Before that, they framed him as a hardworking immigrant targeted by a “cruel” Trump Administration. When the truth emerged—that Garcia allegedly abused his wife, trafficked human beings, and maintained MS-13 connections—the Left didn’t condemn him. They blamed the Trump Administration instead.

Padilla insisted, “Even if you are undocumented, you have the right to due process.” But no one disputes that. The issue is why Democrats spent weeks portraying Garcia as some sort of sainted victim, only to backpedal once his rap sheet became impossible to ignore.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia is not a political prisoner or a misunderstood migrant. He is exactly the kind of dangerous individual the Trump Administration vowed to remove—someone who should never have been allowed to remain in the United States, let alone be turned into a progressive martyr.

Democrats tried to build a narrative. Reality shattered it. And in their clumsy scramble to save face, they exposed exactly why Americans trust President Trump—not them—when it comes to law, order, and border security.
