Things got heated—and frankly, downright absurd—when Democrat Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) appeared on CNN’s “News Central” on Tuesday, May 20. The congresswoman, now facing serious criminal charges from the Trump-led Department of Justice, attempted to spin a violent assault on federal law enforcement officers as just “doing her job.”
The charges stem from a chaotic incident at the Delaney Hall ICE facility in Newark, New Jersey, where Rep. McIver and a group of fellow Democrats, including radical Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, stormed the federal immigration center. Video footage, now circulating widely, clearly shows Rep. McIver physically assaulting agents from both ICE and the Department of Homeland Security during the unlawful entry. The mayor was arrested on the spot.
But instead of taking responsibility for her actions, McIver went on CNN and launched into a wild tirade of excuses, victim-blaming, and political theater.
“I think the charges are absurd. You know, it’s ridiculous,” McIver claimed to CNN host Kate Bolduan, before rambling that she and her colleagues were simply “doing their job.” Of course, congressional oversight doesn’t include barging into a secure federal facility and attacking law enforcement—but that detail seemed to escape the congresswoman.
As the interview went on, McIver doubled down on her denial, bizarrely blaming ICE for the confrontation. “The entire situation was escalated by ICE,” she said. “Homeland came and caused this chaos that we see.”
This despite clear video evidence showing McIver initiating the assault.
Even more shocking, the congresswoman seemed to imply that her behavior—storming a secure federal facility and physically attacking officers—was not only justified, but a necessary part of her congressional duties. “If I’m going to be charged with a crime for doing my job,” she said, “it just speaks to where we’re headed in this country.”
Where we’re headed, evidently, is back to law and order—something Democrats like McIver aren’t used to facing.
Rep. McIver also attempted to paint herself as the victim of political persecution, bizarrely accusing Alina Habba, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, of trying to “coerce” her into admitting wrongdoing. “They wanted me to admit to doing something that I did not do,” she claimed. “I’m not going to roll over and stop doing my job.”
But that defense is falling flat.

Federal authorities maintain that McIver’s actions were criminal, not political. Assaulting federal officers is a felony, no matter what party you belong to or what cause you’re championing. And the DOJ, now under Trump’s restored leadership, has made it clear that lawlessness—even by members of Congress—will no longer be tolerated.
This isn’t oversight. This is another example of the radical Left believing they’re above the law.
The American people deserve representatives who respect the rule of law—not ones who incite chaos, play the victim on cable news, and assault the very men and women tasked with keeping our borders secure. If the DOJ follows through with justice, Rep. McIver might soon find herself explaining her “job” in a courtroom instead of a CNN studio.
