California’s Governor Gavin Newsom is once again proving that when Democrats try to play Donald Trump’s game, they end up embarrassing themselves. In a bizarre online episode, Newsom attempted to mimic President Trump’s famously bold posting style — but instead came across as desperate, petty, and unhinged.
The meltdown unfolded on X (formerly Twitter) as part of Newsom’s ongoing feud with President Trump over illegal immigration, voting laws, and redistricting battles. Newsom has been throwing legal and political punches at Trump, including suing over the use of the National Guard to help restore order in crime-ridden Los Angeles. He’s also threatened a shameless partisan redistricting scheme in California to erase Republican congressional seats — a move many see as an open assault on voter choice.
Apparently frustrated that Trump ignored his self-imposed “deadline” on redistricting, Newsom’s account blasted out a string of over-the-top posts. One read:
“DONALD ‘TACO’ TRUMP, AS MANY CALL HIM, ‘MISSED’ THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE ‘BEAUTIFUL MAPS,’ THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!).”
The Governor doubled down with more theatrical copycat bluster:
“BIG PRESS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK WITH POWERFUL DEMS AND GAVIN NEWSOM — YOUR FAVORITE GOVERNOR — THAT WILL BE DEVASTATING FOR ‘MAGA.’ THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! — GN”
In another post hyping a Los Angeles rally, he promised Democrats would “destroy” Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s “totally rigged maps” — again channeling a poor imitation of Trump’s rhetoric.
Then came the truly outlandish:
“DONALD TRUMP (THE CRIMINAL PRESIDENT) GET READY FOR THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PAYBACK YOU’VE EVER SEEN!!! COULD BE THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE AS YOUR PRESIDENCY ENDS (DEMS RETAKE CONGRESS!). AMERICA WILL BE LIBERATED — ‘LIBERATION DAY’ MANY ARE CALLING IT!!!”
And, in what might be the most unintentionally comical post of all, Newsom compared his “beautiful maps” to the achievements of Christopher Columbus:
“PEOPLE ARE SAYING THEY ARE THE GREATEST MAPS EVER CREATED — EVEN BETTER THAN CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS’. DONALD ‘THE FAILURE’ TRUMP BE WARNED, TOMORROW MAY BE THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE.”
The tirade came as President Trump brushed off Democratic theatrics, labeling them “insane people” during a press conference. Trump, in contrast to Newsom’s online performance, struck a serious tone about the inability of Democrat leadership to get anything done.
“If we want money to fight crime, if we want money to do — only good things — they don’t want to meet about anything. They’re stuck. They don’t know what to do… I would say more than half are sane, but they are led by insane people.”
The contrast couldn’t be clearer: while Trump focuses on law, order, and results, Newsom is busy writing parody posts that read like bad late-night comedy sketches. For a man eyeing higher office, the spectacle was less a show of strength and more a public self-own — and a reminder why Democrats keep losing when they try to beat Trump at his own game.
