Brittney Griner is back in the headlines—and not for her performance on the court.
During a nationally televised WNBA game between the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings on May 25, the controversial center made a scene once again, storming away from a halftime interview and berating league officials with an expletive, all caught live on CBS Sports.
The moment came as Griner was preparing for an on-court interview. Before she could answer a single question, she noticed WNBA referees passing by, abruptly turned, and barked, “Be f—ing better,” before storming off. Left stunned, the CBS anchor awkwardly said, “We’re gonna send it back to you guys,” as the segment fell apart.
The clip quickly went viral, with conservatives lighting up social media to voice what many have been saying for years: this is what happens when you reward entitlement with celebrity.
Florida-based conservative journalist Eric Daugherty summed it up succinctly in his post on X:
“🚨 LOSING IT! Brittney Griner storms away from on-court interview to berate the refs.”
That post sparked a wave of biting comments, with one user asking, *“Why did we bring her back from Russia again?”*—a reference to Griner’s 2022 arrest and imprisonment in Moscow for drug smuggling. Another chimed in, *“Wow, Griner… she really shows her humility after being saved from a Russian prison.”*
This isn’t the first time Griner has drawn criticism—not by a long shot. Known for her hard-left activism, she’s one of the most polarizing figures in women’s sports. In 2020, she infamously called for the WNBA to stop playing the national anthem, aligning herself with the radical Black Lives Matter movement. That stunt earned applause from woke media outlets but alienated a large portion of patriotic Americans.
And let’s not forget the international scandal that made her a household name in the first place. In February 2022, Griner was arrested in Russia after being caught with illegal cannabis oil at a Moscow airport. While the Biden administration scrambled to paint her as “wrongfully detained,” critics saw the incident as a case of another entitled celebrity expecting special treatment abroad.
Instead of facing consequences, Griner was freed in a controversial prisoner swap that sent notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout—nicknamed the “Merchant of Death”—back to Moscow. In return, the U.S. got back a WNBA player who had openly disrespected the American flag and national anthem.
After her release, Griner did a media tour, claiming it was all a “mistake.” But her behavior on Saturday night suggests she hasn’t learned much about humility or gratitude.
The WNBA, which continues to struggle with attendance and relevance despite massive media promotion, has hitched much of its image to players like Griner. But for many Americans, her outbursts and radical activism are a big reason why they’ve tuned out.
As one user put it bluntly: *“This league is more about political lectures than basketball.”*
Brittney Griner may think she’s above reproach, but America is watching—and not impressed.
