Border security isn’t just a policy debate—it’s a matter of life and death. And according to former ICE director and current Trump administration border czar Tom Homan, too many global elites—including Pope Leo XIV—simply don’t understand what’s really happening on the ground.
In a fiery response to recent criticism from the Vatican, Homan didn’t hold back. While affirming his lifelong Catholic faith, he made it clear that he believes church leadership is dangerously out of its depth when it comes to immigration enforcement.
“I love the Catholic Church,” Homan said. “I just wish they’d focus on fixing the church instead of wading into politics they don’t understand.”
The clash comes after Pope Leo XIV suggested that U.S. immigration enforcement policies are “inhumane,” urging Americans to listen to bishops who have echoed similar concerns. But Homan flipped that narrative on its head, arguing that it’s precisely the lack of border enforcement that has fueled human suffering on a massive scale.
Rather than engaging with experienced officials like Homan, critics note the pope has reportedly been meeting with left-wing political figures such as David Axelrod—raising eyebrows among conservatives who see a troubling politicization of the Church.
Homan, for his part, extended an open invitation: come see the reality firsthand.
“I wish they’d sit down with me,” he said. “If they understood what I’ve seen over the past 40 years, they’d realize that a secure border is the most humane thing we can do.”
And the stories he shared are hard to ignore.
From young girls abused by cartels during the dangerous trek north, to tragic scenes involving migrants dying in suffocating tractor trailers, Homan painted a grim picture of what unchecked illegal immigration actually looks like. These aren’t abstract policy debates—they’re human tragedies playing out in real time.
“How many women aren’t being assaulted because they didn’t make that journey?” Homan asked. “How many children aren’t being trafficked? How many lives are being saved?”
According to Homan, the Trump administration’s aggressive border policies have dramatically reduced illegal crossings—by as much as 97%. That, he argues, has dealt a major blow to human trafficking networks and cartel operations that thrive on chaos at the border.
“Human traffickers are going out of business,” he said. “Cartels are losing money. That’s what happens when you enforce the law.”
He also pointed to staggering numbers from previous years, including thousands of migrant deaths and hundreds of thousands of American fatalities linked to fentanyl pouring across the border. For Homan, those figures underscore a simple truth: border security protects both Americans and migrants alike.
The broader message? Good intentions aren’t enough.
While critics in elite circles may frame enforcement as cruelty, Homan insists the real cruelty lies in allowing dangerous, lawless conditions to persist. And until leaders—whether in Washington or the Vatican—are willing to confront that reality, the crisis will continue.
“Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime,” Homan said bluntly. “Secure borders save lives. Period.”
