Another chapter of Biden family turbulence is unfolding — this time involving the president’s daughter, Ashley Biden. The 44-year-old former first daughter has officially filed for divorce from her husband, Philadelphia plastic surgeon Dr. Howard Krein, ending a marriage that lasted more than 13 years.
Court records confirm that Ashley submitted the divorce papers Monday in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. While the filings themselves remain sealed — as divorce records are not public in Philadelphia — the timing and Ashley’s social media activity leave little doubt she’s eager to move on.

On the same day she filed, Ashley posted an Instagram Story featuring a photo of herself strolling through a park, flashing a thumbs-up, with Beyoncé’s “Freedom” playing in the background. She also shared a quote proclaiming, “New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.”

For the Bidens, the split marks yet another personal drama for a family already surrounded by political scandals and ongoing investigations into the president’s son, Hunter Biden. While the details of Ashley’s divorce remain unclear, the highly choreographed public message suggests she’s setting a new course — and wants the world to know it.
Ashley and Krein’s relationship began more than a decade ago, introduced by her late brother, Beau Biden, in 2010. Two years later, they married in Greenville, Delaware, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church — the same church where Ashley was baptized and where the Biden family has deep ties.

The wedding had all the trappings of a high-profile Biden affair. Then–Vice President Joe Biden gave Krein his blessing after the proposal — which took place on a scenic cliff in Big Sur, California — and even played a hands-on role in the reception setup. In a rare moment of candor on stage during the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley reminisced about her father “riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing place settings and arranging plants,” visibly emotional as he prepared for his daughter’s big day.
Krein, now 59, is a respected otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals. The couple, who had been living in Philadelphia, never had children together.

While the split might be framed in the media as a private matter, it is yet another sign of the cracks in the carefully crafted Biden family image. The Bidens have long marketed themselves as the embodiment of family values — a narrative President Biden leaned on heavily during both of his campaigns. But between Hunter Biden’s legal woes, ongoing questions about the family’s financial dealings, and now Ashley’s high-profile divorce, the glossy “perfect family” branding is looking more and more like a political illusion.
For now, Ashley Biden appears ready to close the book on her marriage — and perhaps distance herself from the political chaos that has engulfed her family. Whether the divorce brings peace or more public scrutiny remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: even the Bidens can’t spin away reality forever.
