In a poignant loss for the entertainment world, Drake Hogestyn, the iconic star of “Days of Our Lives,” passed away on Saturday, just a day shy of his 71st birthday. The actor, renowned for his nearly four-decade portrayal of John Black, lost his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis that hit him like a curveball. His death was confirmed in a heartfelt statement on the show’s official Instagram account.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn,” the post revealed. “He faced the challenge of pancreatic cancer with incredible strength and determination. After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. He was the most amazing husband, father, papa, and actor. He loved performing for the Days audience and sharing the stage with the greatest cast, crew, and production team in the business. We love him, and we will miss him all the Days of our Lives.”

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn’s journey began far from the bright lights of Hollywood. He excelled in college baseball at the University of South Florida, majoring in microbiology and applied sciences with aspirations of becoming an oral surgeon. However, life took a different turn when he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and later the New York Yankees, who selected him in the final round of the 1976 MLB Draft. Unfortunately, injuries cut his baseball career short.

Reflecting on his experience, Hogestyn once noted, “Those who can keep injury-free and their head together… those are the ones who are going to move up. But when you’re a last-round pick and you mix in an injury… there’s no investment there. And I knew that.”

Turning his sights toward acting, Hogestyn moved to Los Angeles after being accepted into an acting training program with Columbia Pictures. His big break came when he was cast as John Black, a multi-faceted character on “Days of Our Lives.” For 38 years, he captivated audiences with his performances, appearing in over 4,200 episodes.

Beyond his iconic role, Hogestyn had other notable credits, including appearances in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” a guest role in “Criminal Minds,” and the Hallmark holiday film “Christmas Tree Lane.” However, it was his heartfelt connection with fans and castmates that truly set him apart.

Hogestyn’s colleagues have been vocal in expressing their grief and admiration for the man behind John Black. Alison Sweeney, who played Sami Brady, shared on social media, “Drake was an incredible man. He was funny, generous, and thoughtful. He cared about every single scene, every person. My heart breaks for his family; they meant everything to him.”

Christopher Sean, who portrayed Hogestyn’s television son, expressed his sorrow, stating, “I will always love you. You were more than just my TV father; in my eyes, you were my dad. Thank you for everything you taught me. The world lost a true hero.”

Genie Francis, who had a brief stint on the show, also lamented Hogestyn’s passing, calling him “a wonderful and kind man.” She remembered his deep love for his family, further underscoring the legacy of love and kindness he leaves behind.

Hogestyn is survived by his loving wife, Victoria Post, and their four children—Whitney, Alexandra, Rachael, and Ben—as well as seven grandchildren. His family was a central part of his life, and they undoubtedly feel the void left by his passing.

Drake Hogestyn’s journey from aspiring surgeon and minor league baseball player to a beloved soap opera star is a testament to resilience and the human spirit. As fans and colleagues mourn his loss, they celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments on and off the screen. In the words of his fellow cast members, he will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
