In their latest edition of Batman: Urban Legends, “The Boy Wonder” agrees to go on a date with someone he assisted in rescuing who is of the same sex. Many fans of Batman and Robin are ecstatic about it because it has been talked about for decades. However, there will always be others who are dissatisfied. Having grown up watching Adam West and Burt Ward in the television series “Batman,” I recall my elder brother and me tying towels or pillow covers around our necks and pretending to be Batman and Robin. Of course, I was Robin since I was the youngest and youngest. But that didn’t matter to me since we were the “Dynamic Duo” and the toughest crime fighters in the neighborhood, right here in Our House! They were just two superheroes doing good in the world to us. We weren’t thinking about who they liked or slept with.

As time passed, rumors began to circulate about both of them, Batman and Robin, having something going on, and these were not the sort of tales that the public’s imagination could dismiss without more investigation. Questions began to arise regarding the two of them living together and never having any female visitors. While Alfred, on the other hand, had a steady stream of female visitors to the house! Not to mention, they both were running around town in tights! There were even nasty tales spreading around schools and communities about the three gentlemen of Wayne Manor. I assumed that everyone was only attempting to be comedians and that it was all in good fun because we all liked reading their comic books and watching them on TV. But, there have been some instances where mature males being around young boys has been shown to have terrible outcomes.

However, we now live in a society where more individuals are upfront about their emotions about which gender they want to be with or if they want to explore the possibilities. While some individuals enjoy the freedom to be with whoever they want and express themselves wherever they want, others still believe that it is not healthy for persons of the same sex to be together wherever they want, whenever they want. That is a topic that will very certainly be discussed indefinitely. I believe parents must have an open dialogue with children who are experiencing those emotions, regardless of how they feel about it. I don’t care if Robin is bisexual or simply wants to explore his sexuality as long as he continues to have Batman’s back out on the streets of Gotham! And I’d feel the same way about any superhero out there that I enjoyed for years who believe it’s their time to come out and be liberated. We initially fell in love with these crime fighters for their talents and abilities to stop the bad guys, not for anything else, and I hope that trend continues. I believe that people who favor or disapprove of Robin’s outcome after his date, if it occurs, should simply let it go and let the chemistry take its course.
