Rep. Al Green (D-TX), a congressman long known for theatrical disruptions and anti-Trump grandstanding, delivered yet another eyebrow-raising performance during a House committee hearing — this time erupting into a heated confrontation with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin during a debate over Department of Homeland Security funding.
The tense exchange quickly spiraled into chaos, leaving many Americans wondering whether today’s Democratic Party has abandoned serious debate altogether in favor of outrage and political theater.
Video footage from the hearing shows Green becoming visibly agitated before unleashing a barrage of accusations at Secretary Mullin, at one point branding him a “racist” and repeatedly shouting for him to “shut up.”
Mullin, clearly stunned by the outburst, paused and asked, “Did you just tell me to shut up?”
As the committee room descended into disorder, House leadership attempted to restore control, with the gavel slamming down multiple times to quiet the escalating exchange. But Green, apparently unwilling to back down, fired back with another interruption.
“It’s my time!” the Texas Democrat shouted, speaking over others as tensions boiled over.
Unlike Green, Mullin maintained his composure throughout much of the confrontation.
“I’m not going to let anybody call me a racist, Chairman,” Mullin calmly told House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), after Green’s accusations.
In an apparent attempt to walk back the explosive moment, Green later denied making the remark — despite video showing otherwise — before once again demanding that Mullin be told to “shut up.”
The hearing was eventually paused due to the disruption, according to reports, marking yet another controversial chapter in Green’s long history of headline-grabbing antics.
For many conservatives, the scene looked painfully familiar.
Green has become notorious for his dramatic protests against President Donald Trump, including multiple interruptions during presidential addresses. He has reportedly been removed from Trump’s major speeches on more than one occasion after disruptive behavior inside the chamber.
But critics argue Wednesday’s meltdown may reveal something deeper than simple frustration.
Green recently suffered a major political setback after losing his congressional seat in the Democratic primary runoff for Texas’ 18th Congressional District to freshman Democrat Christian Menefee — a loss many observers say may have fueled growing tensions.
Throughout the hearing, Green appeared particularly focused on revisiting a prior grievance involving President Trump’s February 2026 address, during which he claimed Mullin attempted to confiscate a protest sign he had brought into the chamber.
Holding up a photograph from the incident, Green accused the administration of racial insensitivity and attempted to frame his previous protest as peaceful resistance.
But conservatives online were unimpressed.
Social media erupted after clips of the hearing went viral, with many viewers blasting Green’s behavior as disrespectful and unserious.
“This is what happens when someone has no argument left,” one commenter wrote.
Another added, “No facts. No solutions. Just yelling.”
Conservative commentator Benny Johnson sharply criticized Green’s behavior, writing that the exchange perfectly captured the current state of the Democratic Party.
“No respect. No argument. No facts. No substance,” Johnson wrote. “Just ‘shut up’ and a temper tantrum.”
At a time when Americans are demanding solutions on border security, crime, and national safety, many conservatives see spectacles like this as proof that some lawmakers are more interested in outrage than governing.
And if this latest hearing is any indication, Al Green’s flair for disruption may be the only thing louder than the growing frustration of voters.
