New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has made a name for herself as one of the most politically motivated crusaders against President Donald Trump, delivered a bizarre and unhinged speech last week—accusing the former president of “stalking” her, even as she faces a serious federal investigation of her own.
Speaking at Al Sharpton’s National Action Network headquarters in Harlem on May 3 to promote fellow Democrat Adrienne Adams’ mayoral bid, James turned her speech into a personal rant against President Trump, claiming—without evidence—that he is sending people to harass her at her home. Her comments came just days before the FBI launched an investigation into multiple alleged instances of mortgage fraud committed by James.
“They got individuals coming to my house, standing outside my house,” James fumed. “Last Sunday – church Sunday while I was in church – these individuals were in front of my house, taking pictures and then streaming it, putting it on social media.” James didn’t offer proof of Trump’s involvement, but eagerly portrayed herself as the victim of a political hit job.
Of course, she conveniently left out the context: she’s the same Letitia James who proudly led the charge to secure a \$454 million civil judgment against President Trump, his family, and his business—part of a partisan, years-long legal onslaught that many view as lawfare, pure and simple.
“This isn’t nothing more than a revenge tour! This is nothing more than vindictiveness!” James shouted, accusing Trump of targeting her out of spite. But the irony is rich. After years of using her public office to hound a former president with highly politicized legal attacks, James is now crying foul when she feels the heat in return.
Her lawyer, Abbe David Lowell, doubled down, claiming this is all “political retribution.” He pointed fingers at Trump and even dragged in U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s name, painting James as the victim of a right-wing conspiracy.
But the facts don’t look good for James. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte alleged that James misrepresented a multi-unit property on mortgage documents, claiming it only had four units to qualify for a lower rate under the Home Affordable Modification Program. In reality, the building had five units—making it ineligible. That’s fraud, plain and simple.
Additionally, James is being scrutinized for claiming a Virginia property purchased in 2023 as her “principal residence,” even though she’s been living and working in New York—where she is legally required to reside while serving as Attorney General. That misrepresentation could violate state residency requirements and further complicate her legal standing.
Longtime Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf offered a candid assessment, telling the *New York Post*, “She’s doing whatever she can to alert people who support her that the future does not look good.” In other words, this sudden meltdown isn’t about Trump—it’s about spinning a narrative to distract from her own legal troubles and rev up her base.
Letitia James built her career by weaponizing her office against conservatives—particularly President Trump. Now, as federal investigators begin turning over the rocks in her own backyard, she’s playing the victim, ranting about conspiracies and painting herself as the target of “vindictiveness.” But the facts suggest something far simpler: she’s finally being held to the same standard she’s tried to apply to others.
And for once, the lawfare crowd may have to face the law themselves.
