Another horrifying example of the Biden administration’s reckless border policies played out in a New York City park over the weekend—this time leaving an off-duty federal officer fighting for his life.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer was shot in the face and arm late Saturday night during a brazen attack by two criminals on a moped. One of the attackers, identified as 21-year-old illegal immigrant Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, was hit by return fire from the wounded officer—who fought back heroically despite his injuries.

According to sources, Mora is a Dominican national with a long rap sheet, including kidnapping, weapons charges, and assaults on women—yet was repeatedly released thanks to New York’s sanctuary city policies and a federal immigration system neutered under President Biden.

Mora had a deportation order issued in 2023. But like so many others under this administration, he was set free after illegally entering the U.S. at the southern border in April 2023. Why? Because there wasn’t enough space in detention. Instead of deportation, Mora was given a piece of paper and told to show up to court—then disappeared into the system, racking up charges with zero consequences.

His crime spree culminated Saturday night when he and an accomplice attempted to rob the off-duty CBP officer and a woman near the Hudson River in Fort Washington Park around 11:50 p.m. During the struggle, Mora shot the officer in the face and forearm. In a stunning display of courage, the federal agent returned fire, hitting Mora three times. The two suspects fled on a moped.

Mora later walked into a Bronx hospital with gunshot wounds and is now in custody. The second suspect remains at large.

This incident, which was caught on surveillance video, is a damning indictment of progressive lawlessness and open-border insanity.

President Trump didn’t hold back, slamming the Biden administration’s immigration policies in a Truth Social post:
“Last night, in New York City, an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden. He was apprehended at the Border in April 2023 but, instead of being deported, was RELEASED… demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage.”

Mora’s criminal record is the stuff of nightmares:

* Assaulted a pregnant woman in August 2024
* Threatened another migrant with a machete days later
* Arrested in November for violating a protection order
* Subject of a bench warrant in January
* Wanted in Massachusetts for a pawn shop robbery and kidnapping

Yet not one of these charges led to him being detained or deported. Why? Because New York’s sanctuary policies and weak bail reform laws allow violent criminals to roam free—especially if they’re in the country illegally.

Even Mayor Eric Adams, typically a defender of progressive policies, admitted federal law needs fixing:
“We’re not allowed to coordinate with civil deportation… Whatever we need to do in our federal laws to ensure that dangerous people are not on our streets, federal authorities need to do that.”

Too little, too late.

As one frustrated law enforcement official told reporters:
“This is failure at every level. They’re still missing the criminals.”

The officer is in stable condition following surgery. Meanwhile, the Biden administration’s border disaster continues to put American lives at risk—while criminals like Mora walk the streets.

Let’s call it what it is: open borders have deadly consequences.
