In yet another stunning display of leftist overreach, Chicago’s ultra-woke Mayor Brandon Johnson has unveiled a taxpayer-funded reparations program that openly discriminates based on race. Conservatives are rightly sounding the alarm over what they see as a dangerous and divisive precedent—government-sanctioned handouts based solely on skin color.
On June 17, Mayor Johnson signed an executive order launching the “Black Reparations Task Force,” a new initiative that will funnel public funds into “race-based grants” for black residents of Chicago. The announcement, timed for Juneteenth, was met with swift and overwhelming backlash from conservatives across the country, who called it exactly what it is: blatant racial favoritism under the guise of “equity.”
In a now-viral video from the signing event, Johnson said the program’s goal is to help black Chicagoans “reclaim ownership of our own communities.” He added, “That is the spirit of Juneteenth… remembering our past and working toward a more just future; investing in black is not a criminal act.”
But many Americans saw through the carefully worded rhetoric. The popular conservative X account *End Wokeness* blasted the clip to its millions of followers, triggering a wave of criticism. Commentator Gunther Eagleman didn’t mince words, posting, “Nothing to see here except blatant racism.” Another account chimed in, “This is ridiculously racist.”
They’re not wrong.
While Johnson tries to paint this as a moral crusade, the policy amounts to race-based redistribution—paid for by all Chicago taxpayers, regardless of background. The reparations plan, his office said, will offer financial benefits specifically for black residents, excluding others based solely on race. If that sounds unconstitutional, it’s because it likely is.
In an April 23 press release, Johnson claimed the program is about healing past injustices, saying, “This Reparations Task Force represents a pivotal moment in our city’s history… to repair the generations of harm our people have endured.”
Translation: Johnson wants to throw more money at a problem progressive leadership helped create—only this time, he wants to do it in a way that punishes innocent residents who had nothing to do with historical wrongs.
The city’s Chief Equity Officer, Carla Kupe, doubled down on the woke messaging, stating that Chicago must “acknowledge and address historic and present-day racial inequities.” She offered the usual social justice platitudes about “honoring dignity” and giving everyone “what they need to thrive”—as long as they qualify by race.
Not to be outdone, Aldermanic Black Caucus Chairwoman Stephanie Coleman bragged, “We are not just making history, we are correcting it.”
But conservatives aren’t buying it. What they see is another Democrat-run city digging deeper into identity politics, pushing divisive racial narratives instead of focusing on real issues like violent crime, crumbling infrastructure, and mass exodus from the city.
The real question now is: how far are Democrats willing to go with these race-based policies? And will the courts—or voters—finally step in and say enough is enough?
Because if “equity” now means excluding people based on their skin color, it’s not progress—it’s just racism repackaged in woke wrapping.
