In a poignant twist of fate, Shannen Doherty, beloved star of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” finalized her divorce from estranged husband Kurt Iswarienko just a day before her tragic death at 53. The actress, who battled stage IV cancer, signed off on paperwork to waive spousal support on Friday, leaving behind a tumultuous chapter of her life marred by betrayal and heartbreak.
Doherty and Iswarienko, a photographer, agreed to an uncontested dissolution of their 12-year marriage. Iswarienko signed the paperwork on Saturday, the day Doherty succumbed to her long and painful fight with cancer.

The roots of their split trace back to April 2023 when Doherty filed for divorce, accusing Iswarienko of infidelity. These accusations came to light during one of the most challenging periods of her life. In a December episode of her podcast, “Let’s Be Clear,” Doherty revealed the depth of her anguish, recounting how she discovered her husband’s alleged affair just before undergoing brain surgery.

“To not go into that surgery, even though he wanted to be there, I couldn’t face it with him by my side,” Doherty confessed. “I felt so betrayed. At the end of the day, I felt incredibly unloved by someone I had loved with all my heart for 14 years.”

Doherty’s battle with cancer began in 2015 with a breast cancer diagnosis that led to a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. Though she achieved remission in 2017, her cancer returned with a vengeance in 2020 as stage IV. Despite her declining health, Doherty was forced to contend with a bitter divorce, which only added to her suffering.

Last month, Doherty claimed in court documents that Iswarienko was deliberately delaying their divorce and withholding spousal support, hoping she would pass away before any payments were due. “It is simply not right that Kurt be permitted to prolong our divorce in hopes that I die before he is required to pay me,” she wrote, highlighting the cruelty of his actions.

Iswarienko denied these claims, asserting that he had sought to finalize the divorce in September 2023 with a settlement offer that Doherty rejected. Doherty, however, argued that his offer avoided addressing his earnings from original works created during their marriage. She requested $15,343 in monthly spousal support, $9,100 for legal fees, and an additional $11,800 to cover costs incurred while trying to obtain full financial disclosure from Iswarienko.

The divorce saga took a toll on Doherty’s emotional and physical well-being. Her friend Tara Furiani criticized Iswarienko in a LinkedIn post, accusing him of causing “profound” pain and suffering. Furiani alleged that Doherty lost everything, including her SAG insurance, while Iswarienko dragged his feet in court, hoping to evade financial responsibilities until her death rendered the matter moot.

Iswarienko was Doherty’s third husband. Her previous marriages, to Ashley Hamilton and Rick Salomon, were brief and childless. Despite her tumultuous marital history, Doherty remained a believer in love. “I failed three times at marriage,” she said in her December podcast. “I also take some responsibility for the issues in our marriage with Kurt. Actually, that’s not true. I do not take responsibility for the demise of our marriage, but I do take responsibility for some of the issues.”

Shannen Doherty’s life was marked by resilience and courage, qualities that endeared her to millions of fans. Her final days were overshadowed by a painful divorce and the betrayal of someone she once loved deeply. Yet, through it all, Doherty’s spirit remained unbroken. Her legacy is one of strength, grace, and an unwavering fight for dignity in the face of overwhelming adversity. As we remember her, let her story serve as a testament to the enduring power of resilience and the importance of standing up for oneself, even in the darkest times.
