Just before the government shutdown finally sputtered to an end, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins delivered a political thunderbolt: a scathing takedown of the SNAP welfare system, which she described as “bloated, broken, dysfunctional, and corrupt.” And unlike the left’s usual emotional appeals, Rollins came armed with hard data — the kind Democrats hope the public never sees.
Rollins revealed that after ordering all 50 states to submit their SNAP data so the administration could weed out illegal recipients, only 29 states — mostly Republican-led — complied. Even so, the results were devastating: **thousands of illegal EBT transactions, nearly 700,000 removals from the rolls, over 100 arrests, one man drawing benefits in six different states, and roughly 5,000 dead people still collecting welfare.**
If this is what appeared in less than half the country, one can only imagine what is hiding inside California and New York.
Rollins didn’t mince words. “The SNAP program is astonishing when you dig in,” she said. “We told every state to send us their SNAP data so we could make sure illegal immigrants aren’t getting benefits meant for American families.”
Her findings were as politically explosive as they were troubling. “The Democrat Party has turned its back on working Americans,” Rollins warned. “They’ve built their entire strategy around protecting illegal aliens. They know if the handouts stop, those illegals will go back home — and Democrats will lose 20+ seats after the next census.”
In other words, the left’s power depends on keeping the welfare trough endlessly stocked and wide open.
Rollins continued hammering home the numbers: “Thousands and thousands of illegal uses of the EBT card. Nearly 700,000 people removed since President Trump took office. About 118 arrests. One guy collecting benefits in six different states. And around 5,000 dead people still getting checks.”
Yet predictably, the activist class — desperate to protect the welfare-industrial complex — immediately tried to dismiss the findings.
Nicole Schneidman of Protect Democracy whined that the administration was “manipulating data” and tried downplaying the fraud by saying that 42 million people receive SNAP nationwide — implying mass fraud is fine as long as the program is big enough.
Another left-wing academic, Tracy Roof of the University of Richmond, claimed that because only 118 people were arrested, “clearly a lot of those 700,000 people are not committing fraud” — ignoring that fraud investigations take time, and removal from the rolls doesn’t require a criminal conviction.
She then blamed “high food prices” (caused largely by Democrat inflationary policies) as justification for keeping SNAP swollen beyond recognition.
The left’s defense boils down to this: fraud doesn’t matter if the program is big enough, and anyone who insists on accountability must hate poor people.
But Rollins cut through the noise and spoke for millions of taxpayers: the SNAP system is a mess, Democrats have enabled the abuse for political gain, and the Trump administration is finally doing the work Congress refuses to do — cleaning up the corruption and restoring integrity to a welfare program that has long operated as a Democratic vote machine.
