In what should have been an uncontroversial moment of respect for our veterans, NFL Hall of Famer and “NFL on Fox” analyst Michael Strahan is now under fire following Fox’s Veterans Day special broadcast at Naval Base San Diego. While Strahan and the entire Fox crew stood for the national anthem, some viewers took issue with the former Giants star not placing his hand over his heart. Instead, Strahan stood respectfully with his hands in front of him, fingers interlocked, a stance that drew backlash online, particularly as America honored its military heroes.

Strahan’s apparent choice of hand position was brief but sparked immediate reactions. One user on X (formerly Twitter) demanded answers: “What’s wrong with Strahan? Blatant disrespect for the men and women he is surrounded by protecting his rights and freedoms.” Another exclaimed, “Strahan couldn’t put his hand over his heart? HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO EVERYONE EXCEPT MICHAEL STRAHAN!! NO CLASS!!”

It’s an example of today’s hyper-vigilant social media culture, ready to pounce on even the smallest gestures and assign grave meaning. However, the criticism is ironic given Strahan’s personal background. Raised in a military family, his father served 23 years in the U.S. Army, part of the prestigious 82nd Airborne Division. Strahan has spoken frequently about the profound respect he holds for the military, even referring to himself as a “military brat.” For many, his standing in respectful attention would be a sign of his upbringing and understanding of military decorum.

Several fans defended Strahan, with one user pointing out, “Strahan is the son of a Retired MAJ! I’m sure he has more respect for this country than you ever will!” Another user echoed, “He stood very respectfully as he was no doubt taught to do by his father. Strahan has shared many times over his respect for veterans.”

The controversy highlights a recurring issue where public figures face intense scrutiny over gestures during the national anthem. Notably, during the 2016 Olympics, gymnast Gabby Douglas faced similar backlash for standing at attention without her hand over her heart. She later apologized, stating she meant no disrespect. In the NFL, anthem-related controversies have been explosive since former quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest sparked a nationwide debate. However, while some incidents involve overt political stances, Strahan’s respectful stance doesn’t fit that narrative — unless we’re reaching.

Interestingly, U.S. Flag Code does suggest civilians place their hand over their heart during the anthem, but it also notes standing at attention as an appropriate display of respect. Strahan’s critics might be missing the fact that intent and respect are what matter most.

This latest criticism seems all the more absurd given that it took place on a broadcast explicitly designed to honor America’s veterans. During the Fox special, NFL icon Tom Brady read a stirring tribute, honoring the dedication and sacrifice of the men and women who serve. “You have our respect,” he said. “You have the best team in the world — and I’ve seen some great teams.” His words captured the spirit of the event, reminding us all that our military members deserve respect and gratitude, not empty controversies.

Strahan’s respectful presence, even with his hands in front of him, should not distract from the true meaning of Veterans Day. The hyper-focus on minor gestures only detracts from honoring our veterans and appreciating the freedom they protect. Instead of overanalyzing a hand position, perhaps we should focus on what Veterans Day is truly about: honoring those who serve.
