Parking tickets are an easy way to ruin your whole day.

Because of one moment of poor judgement while parking your vehicle, you suddenly owe a hefty chunk of change to the city. You don’t feel like you’re money is going to something worthwhile and it all just feels like a big waste.

Well, one town in Virginia is trying to take the sting out of parking tickets and make residents feel like they are doing something worthwhile. In Strasburg, Virginia, it’s still unlawful to park your car in a manner that isn’t compliant with city ordinances.

However, if you get caught, you don’t have to just throw money at the city. Instead, you can “pay” for your mistake by donating canned food items to a charity program that feeds hungry people.

Ten canned food items will erase any parking tickets leveled against citizens of this community. While the program is only scheduled to go on for a year, it’s already being hailed by citizens as a brilliant new move by the city.

Citizens are flocking to the social media pages of the town’s police department to share their overwhelming support for the initiative. No one likes to get a parking ticket.

But if you can overturn your ticket by doing an act of charity, suddenly it doesn’t seem like such a bad thing after all.
