We have a groove that is underneath our nose. We see this groove every time that we look in the mirror, but most of us do not know what this groove is for. The groove is known as the philtrum.
An unborn baby starts to develop facial features around the sixth or eighth week of pregnancy. The philtrum is the area where the human face merges. If the face does not merge properly, then a number of deformities can result, including cleft palate.
The good news is that even if everything does not form properly, most congenital defects can be corrected. Cleft palate is usually corrected with surgery.
