Things turned unpleasant when a young man decided to spit in the face of a Marine during an event to show community appreciation of military efforts to protect this country. During an event in Columbus, Ohio, a group of Marines – there to share their love of this country – were accosted by a young man who, with no apparent provocation whatsoever, began calling the Marines “murderers.” The Marines originally did not react.
This did not deter the man. It fueled him, leading the young man to spit in one of the Marine’s faces. Still showing great restraint, the Marine’s retaliation entailed only confronting the man, taking a power position and refusing to let the angry man leave. Fellow Marines joined him.
While the Marines are obviously angry, they are not resorting to violent and seem more interested in intimidating the assaulter than hurting him. Eventually, a Columbus police officer arrives on the scene and breaks up the melee. The Marine’s wife witnessed and captured the entire incident on her phone.
She said later she was taken aback by the man’s assault and was stunned he referred to her husband as a murderer and demeaned the uniformed Marines for “defending our freedoms.” The Marine who was spit on later wrote on his Facebook page, “A big thanks to Columbus P.D and Ohio Highway patrol for assisting.” Some reports imply the man spit on a second Marine. Civilian witnesses say the attack was unwarranted and the man was “lucky” he walked away unscathed.
