Are you aware that it is estimated that 70 percent of the olive oil sold in stores is fake?

Olive oil has long been a staple of the Mediterranean diet. Since people in this region have longer lifespans and are in better shape, this diet has become increasingly popular and with it, consumption of olive oil in the United States has risen. Scientific research has discovered a range of health benefits linked to a diet rich in olive oil. Incorporating olive oil as a regular part of the diet has been linked to a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, lower anxiety levels, better cardiovascular health, and improved bowel regularity.

Since the popularity of olive oil has grown so rapidly in recent years, fraudulent companies have discovered how to trick consumers into purchasing fake olive oil. Researchers at The University of California sent researchers to test name-brand “extra virgin olive oil” and discovered that over 70 percent of the oil sold was fake. Before you purchase olive oil again, be sure to understand the difference between fake and genuine products.

To start, be aware that labeling a product “extra virgin olive oil” does not describe its quality or purity (it simply refers to the manufacturing process). Olive oil is produced in 4 different grades, the lowest of which is not meant for human consumption. The highest grade, virgin, has a more pleasant taste and fragrance.

Fake olive oil is composed of a combination of various oils and only a small portion of actual olive oil. This means you are actually consuming a blend of vegetable oils rather than receiving the health benefits that olive oil has to offer. To ensure that your olive oil is genuine, consider purchasing it from local farmers.

You can also check for third party certification on the packaging labels.

Examples of seals that are trustworthy include The Australian Olive Association, The California Olive Oil Council, PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), and PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). The following brands have been known to manufacture fake olive oil: Mezzetta, Safeway, Whole foods, Newman’s Own, Berio, Star, and Colavita.

Alternatively, these brands have been proven to be genuine and trusted: Lucini, California Olive Branch, Lucero, Cobram Estate, and Kirkland Organic.
