This one reminds me of the old Seinfeld episode in which Kramer tries to help Elaine put an ethnic-themed clothing store, Putumayo, out of business.

She was upset about their lousy customer service. Kramer goes in there and secretly starts removing the desiccant packs (silica gel) out of all the pockets of the clothing, figuring each garment will be ruined in five years.

We’ve all seen these tiny packets in our shoes, pocketbooks and/or clothing at least once in our lives. Most of us just toss out the desiccants, which have been included with an item to keep it from drying out.

Believe it or not, these tiny packs of silicon dioxide can be used for a variety of amazing things around your home.

Yumi Sakugawa came up with some genius ideas, like storing silica gel packs inside a box of photographs to preserve their color and quality. Let’s say you dropped your cellphone in water; take it out and dry it.

Then, place the battery and phone in an airtight container overnight with some you-know what. The silica gel will re-new everything by morning.

Also, when it comes to your favorite sterling silver jewelry, just toss a silica gel packet in your jewelry box to avoid tarnishing. Who knew that tiny annoying pack of desiccant could protect so many of your favorite things?

Yumi actually lists 11 of her best uses for silica gel packets. You’ll want to read about each one. Check them out here.
