A UK man claims to have made an amazing discovery while walking along a beach in Norfolk.
Exactly what he found is now the subject of considerable debate. Some even say that it is an elaborate hoax.
Paul Jones shared photos of his find on Facebook, and they quickly went viral. The post states “Today at Great Yarmouth we found what looks like a dead mermaid washed up on the beach.”
The series of rather gruesome photos appear to show a decaying form with a semi-intact head and fins and a severely decomposed midsection. Some were quick to accept Jones’s claim, although they could not explain why a mermaid might choose to give up warm tropical waters for the chill of the North Sea.
Others thought it was more likely that the remains were those of a dead seal. The seal theory would make sense since the area is known for a large colony of seals, but it does not explain why the head appears to be decidedly human-like.
To add even more mystery to the situation, Jones’s Facebook profile shows that he is an avid modeler with a particular interest in the macabre. He is also a member of a Facebook group dedicated to horror and Halloween DIY.
